I'm probably the most selfish, stupid person on the planet and it's taken me this long to finally realize it.
My parents literally gave me everything I ever wanted-- soulmate included. I was just so blindly distracted to see him standing behind his older brother.
Was all of this my fault?
Abso-fucking-lutely.
I knew something was different when we were younger. I think it happened when we first kissed; I just didn't want to admit it. I didn't want things to change between me and Nate and look where that got me?
As football practice ended, Nate jogged over to where I was sitting on the bleachers. I walked down the stairs and up to the fence, watching as he pulled his gloves off and stuffed them in his helmet, which thudded onto the ground a moment later.
"Sunny... hey."
"Hi, Nate."
I felt my nerves getting the best of me and when I looked up at him, all I wanted was to run my fingers through his wavy blonde hair and pull him closer.
I cursed this fence for separating us just like I cursed myself for being so stupid.
"What are you doing here? Weren't you supposed to be filming your music video?"
The guilt in my stomach began to burn and I didn't know how to express how awful I felt for letting him think that he was less important to me than a music video, so all I could do was shrug and tell him the truth.
"I convinced my manager to reschedule it. I... I didn't wanna miss my last homecoming game."
As my fingers linked around the fence, Nate's fingers covered mine and his blue eyes beamed down at me, making me squint a little from the setting sun behind him.
"And the dance? Still meeting up with 'Flower Dude'?"
I stared back and forth between his eyes and shrugged, popping my bottom lip out.
He rolled his eyes and began shaking his head.
"Come on, Sun."
"Nate, what do you want me to do? You-- You have a girlfriend."
"And, Sunny, what do you want me to do? What does me having a girlfriend have anything to do with it?"
I felt my eyes beginning to sting and tears forming and as I looked up and noticed the look on his face; it was like he was pushing me like he wanted me to say it.
His perfect features, from his gorgeous hair to his illuminating eyes, down to the cute way his chin sorta dimpled-- it all haunted me, especially as Mariah ran up, seeming to pop up out of nowhere.
I dropped my hands quicker than Nate could, stuffing them in my back pockets and I had to look away when she kissed his cheek.
"Hey, babe. Miss me?"
"Em... hey."
Mariah's green eyes bounced over to me and she glared for a second before a bright, super sweet, fake smile found its way onto her face.
"Oh, hey, Sunny. I didn't see you there."
"Hey, Mariah."
I smirked sweetly, even though I wanted to rip this bitch's arms off of Nate's bicep.
I know she saw me.
She ran over because she saw me.
I knew I had no right to feel the smoldering rage that was raging through me, but I couldn't help it. Just as I took a step back, ready to leave, Nate spoke up, cutting Mariah off before the next slick thing came out of her mouth.
"Flower was just reminding me that we have our family dinner tonight."
I didn't have to hide the confusion on my face, knowing our families' monthly dinner wasn't until next week; Mariah's eyes widened and the grip on Nate's arm tightened when she looked up at him and began to bat her eyelashes.
"Ooh, can I come?"
"It's actually at Sunny's house tonight."
I lifted an eyebrow but regained my composure when Mariah looked over at me, sending an almost threatening look at me before turning back to Nate.
"Sunny doesn't mind though, right?"
Before I could even speak, Nate's deep voice boomed, shocking both me and Mariah.
"No. And you can't just put her on the spot like that."
"But--"
"But, nothing. I'm not about to show up at her mom's house with an uninvited guest, okay? So, just drop it, already."
I gulped and had to stifle back a small moan.
That was kinda hot.
I bit my lip, suddenly feeling the need to change my panties when Nate looked back at me.
"I gotta go home and shower real quick, but, tell our moms I'll be there soon, okay?"
I nodded and watched him and Mariah walking away, and as I turned to head for my car, confusion and curiosity began coursing through my veins.
What the hell just happened?
