The next morning, I pulled into my spot in the student parking lot, not bothering to stop and greet all the students excited for tonight's season-opener.

I had to find Sunny.

I didn't want it to be weird between us and I knew by the way she ran out, we needed to talk as soon as possible.

She wasn't at her locker or with Gia before 1st bell.

She wasn't in 2nd period...

I checked at break to see if her car was even in its designated spot, but the familiar Mercedes Roadster was nowhere in sight.

She wasn't there all day.

My heart kinda sank when she missed the fall pep rally after lunch.

I was barely paying attention when the principal called my name, announcing me last year's MVP.

It wasn't until I felt Monica's lips on my cheek and her arms wrapped around my shoulders.

I shook my head a little, regaining focus and as I scanned the crowd, I spotted a Sunny-less Gia, glaring at me as she flipped me the middle finger.

I caught up with her after the pep rally, wanting to know what that whole display was about.

"What the hell, Gee? What was that about and... where's Sunny?"

She shook her head and glared at me, crossing her arms in defense.

"You know, you were supposed to be the sweet, smart one. The whole time, I was on Team Nate."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Sunny told me about what happened at your place last night... after the game."

I rolled my eyes, not feeling like defending myself, but it felt like I had been backed up into a wall.

"You don't get it, Gee. I've been chasing after her my entire life. At this point... I'm just tired."

I sighed, thinking back to all the moments I shared with the girl who had no idea how I felt.

"And, Mariah?"

I shrugged, looking up at Gia with a slightly confused smile on my face.

"She's cool...? I don't know... It's just nice to have someone who actually wants me."
