The echoing crackling noise from the gun going off stunned me, rattling me motionless, watching the chaos in front of me.
"Adam, please... stop! Nate, babe,-- guys just stop!"
Screams were heard all around as some people ran from the scene, but over Adam's shoulder, I could see some of the people from our party bus running towards us.
Nate's face softened the second he looked over at me and my eyes widened in shock when Adam began pointing the gun at Nate.
Luckily, he'd turned back around in time to see, and soon, the two were scuffling in the parking lot, battling for the weapon.
Another shot went off and as Nate and Adma both stumbled to the ground, I didn't even hear myself screaming.
Spencer and some of the guys had just popped up right before the second shot, and when Adam rolled away, the red stain on Nate's shirt had my feet moving quicker than they ever had.
"Nate, no!"
I dropped down to the ground and cradled his head, shaking mine as tears began to fall down my face.
My free hand moved down to open his jacket and I wailed in agony when I saw that he had been shot.
Spencer and the guys held Adam down, and one of the security guards who was an off-duty cop called in what happened.
It felt like hours had gone by after the paramedics wheeled Nate away, applying pressure to his wound while performing CPR.
I stayed on the scene, forced to give my statement instead of being able to go with Nate.
"Sunny!"
I was sitting in the back of an open ambulance being checked out when I looked up and saw my dad, fear in his eyes as I ran over to where he was standing behind the tape.
I threw myself onto him, and buried my face in his chest, wanting nothing more than to wake up from this nightmare.
"Babygirl, what happened?"
"Nate got shot."
My dad pulled back and looked at me in disbelief, pain, and anger.
"What?"
"Sir, I'm sorry, but she's gonna have to stay put for just a bit longer."
My dad's eyes darted over to the policeman who had just walked up.
"No, I'm sorry, but she's seventeen and as her father, I'm well within my right to take her. Now, if you have any more questions for my daughter, we'll be at the hospital."
✨
My dad rushed me away and soon we were at the closest hospital, figuring that's where Nate was taken.
After getting confirmation, we raced down the hall and found the O'Connells in the waiting room.
Nate's mom was a mess, wrapping her arms around me for a moment and I hated that she had to see her son's blood on my white dress.
Uncle Karl and my dad hugged and after Aunt Trish let me go, I sat next to an eerily silent Tristan.
His knee was bouncing wildly and I did the only thing I thought could make this better for either of us.
He looked down at our hands laced together and gave a good squeeze while I leaned my head on his shoulder, sniffling a bit as tears streamed down my face.
We sat and there and as I prayed to every God I could think of, Nate's face was all I could see.
