(Y/n)'s P.O.V

"Yeah, I thought you might have been listening" He admitted after I told him the full story, he let go of the rosary he held in his hand. I was surprised from his words, turning met head to look at the blond. His face was expressionless as his sky blue eyes met with my (e/c) ones. "I didn't hear the door open, or close. We've stayed in this apartment for a few days, the door is kinda loud even when your trying to be quiet, I heard it open and close after about halfway into our conversation, you think I wouldn't notice?" He asked me as my face burns in embarrassment at his analysis. I guess I wasn't as careful as I thought...

"Was it something Near said..? Is that what's got you upset?" He asked me. "Don't listen to that-" before he can finish insulting his rival, I cut him off gently.

"No... Yes..? Not exactly... I'm not really sure" I tell him confused in my own thoughts, remembering back to earlier today made the words play through my head again like it has all day so many times.

"Matt and (Y/n) aren't just some expendable people to you are they? Could you forgive yourself if they died because of you too?"

"I'm just... Scared" I said to him with my voice barely above a whisper, unsure if he had heard me at all. The subtle yet noticeable way Mello's expression shifts however, tells me that he heard exactly what I said, but I continue before he can get a word in. "I don't want to loose you... Or Matt... I don't want to loose anyone I care about to this damn investigation!" I gritted my teeth as I can feel the tears finally fall from my blurry eyes, despite my desperation to hold them back. The liquid trails down my cheeks as it collects under my chin before dripping onto my thighs.

"K-Kira has already made it clear that they don't care who's blood has to be spilled... They'll kill anyone who gets in their way!" I cried hysterically, "We're no exception to that...." my voice drops into a quiet tone, barely above a whisper as my hands rest upon my forehead, burying them away from Mello's eyes. The humiliation of laying this all out in front of him like this...

The only noise that can be heard in the apartment was the subtle sounds of the city, muffled voices from the streets down below and the cars that sped by. Mello remains silent, although I can't really piece together what I would say if I was in his shoes either.

As I turn to face him, his expression was a soft one, one that I am most used to seeing. It was a sincere, sympathetic expression I've only seen a few times back at the orphanage, an expression I wish I could have seen more back then. It all reminds me of a particular time when we both lived in Hampshire still. We were still young at the time, maybe 8 or so. It was a cold October night, and Halloween was only a few days away.

"T-those stories aren't true!" I would cry as older kid would torment me with the ghost stories that circled around Wammy's House that always come back around this time of the year. Most of the stories were obviously fake, like the one about the groundskeeper who was buried behind the shed, or the one about the caretaker who dissapeared after entering room 13 after midnight.

There was one story however... A story that scared us kids the most. About a boy who really lived in this building... And died in this building.

Near and Mello weren't the only successors to L, there were others in the past, divided into 4 different generations, Near and Mello are known as L's 'fourth generation successors'. The story lies with L's first 'generation' of successors, nobody knows their real names but they had letters just like Mello and Near, their letters were "A" and "B".
