Chapter 7

The walk to the truck is short. Charley turns to Melody. "Your scent is getting stronger." Then he steps up his pace. When they get there, it is loaded with these large metal things. Melody has no idea what they are. The two of them must tarp the load before they leave. "I think I can do it better this time, it is getting easier each time I do it."

Charley checks them and tightens them a little more. "You are getting better, now we have to toughen you up to get them tight enough."

"I'm trying, stop complaining. Not all of us are built like a wall of muscle."

"You did a good job." Charley messes with her hair. Then they hop in the truck, and they pull out.

"Can I put on the radio?" Charley nods yes. Then Melody starts humming with the song on the radio.

The traffic is light, and they enter the main highway with no effort at all. "We are going to San Antonio. It will take ten and half hours to get there." Then he gets a stern look, "I called my brother, he wants to meet you. He is calling me later today, hopefully we will be meeting him in San Antonio."

Melody is shaking a little, "If he doesn't want me around, I-I-I will be fine. Just tell me what place we are going to and I will pick one and get out there. If you don't mind me riding along a little longer."

"Melody, no matter what he says I am staying with you, and you are staying with me until you want to leave me, and it is safe for you to be alone."

A tear rolls down her face, "I don't know how to thank you. All you do is help me and I keep making things harder. Now I have to give you some more bad news, my wolf is coming. She said in about twelve hours or less. I will shift for the first time. I'm sorry I am such a problem."

Charley studies her, "That's not possible, you had to have sifted. How do I smell your wolf without you shifting?"

"I don't know, all I know is that she said she is late because of what I was going through. That I will be surprised at what she looks like when I see her. She must be strong she has helped me heal for the last month."

"What do you mean heal. Are you sick or did you get hurt?"

"My brother and father liked to take their bad moods out on me and some of the pack members would hit me for the hell of it."

"That is some pack you come from." You can see Charley is pissed. "The first sign of you shifting we will have to pull off to a private place. You will need some space and some privacy while you shift."

The rest of the day is quiet, Charley keeps looking at Melody waiting for her to start to shift. With only a few stops along the way for drinks and food that doesn't take long, they make good time, it only took nine hours to get to the next stop.

"Little one it is too late to get the truck unloaded. The security guard told me to park out back between the fence and the woods."

"Are we going to sleep in the truck tonight?"

"We can't have you shifting in a motel room now can we. The woods would be nice for your first run after your shift. I picked up sandwiches for us to eat tonight. If you decided to shift while we were eating out somewhere it would not be a good thing either."

"Sandwiches are fine for me, I just feel bad you are eating cold food because of me."

"Driving truck like I do I am always eating cold food. That comes with the job. You know San Antonio is a nice city and pretty, we can look around while we wait for my brother. After the shift I mean."

"I would like that, aww," Melody bends over in pain and her bones are cracking and rearranging. Charley curses, picks her up and puts her on the ground. The pain continues, for what seems like hours then she is standing there as her wolf. Charley is completely stunned.

"Melody you are beautiful. I have never seen a wolf this color. You are huge, as big as me if not bigger. Little one you are not so little. Your light silver fur is glowing. Would you like to take a run with me?"

Melody's wolf nods, then Charley goes behind the truck. When he comes out he is a large dark grey wolf. They nod to each other then take off in the woods. The sun is coming up by the time they get back to the truck.

They both shift back to their human forms, Charley in the back of the truck, Melody at the edge of the woods. "You are really beautiful, and so much bigger than a normal she-wolf. You glow like the moon. The silver color glows so unbelievably bright." Charley is so amazed by her wolf.

"Thanks Charley. Her name is Harmony. I feel different sense I shifted so much stronger. Like a part of me that I was missing has come back to me."

"That is because it has come home to you. Our wolves are there when we are born, they have to grow with you and when you are strong enough, they step up."

"I have never thought of it that way, you are right though. Can we take a nap before this load has to be unloaded."

"That, little one, is a good idea." He gives her the bed and goes to sleep in the front seat.

Two hours later there was a banging on the door of the truck. Charley opens it, "You ready to get unloaded?"

"Yeah, I'm coming around." Melody sleeps through the load coming off the truck. The tarps are all folded and laid on the flat bed, "Can I leave the truck here till the next load is ready? It will be ready to load in a day or so."

"That's no problem, park it over there in the corner out of the way. If you leave the keys we will load it for you and call when it is ready to go."

"Thanks, I'd appreciate that. Is there a place we can rent a car around here?"

"Four blocks down on the right."

Charley nods then goes to wake up Melody. "Little one, time to get up we have to go get a car. Then get cleaned up."

Melody starts moving, her eyes blinking open. "Do I bring my stuff with me or leave it in the truck?"

"You always bring it with you if you are not going to be around the truck, it is sad but you can't trust people. We have to get a car and then a room for us and my brother." Charley's phone rings. Hey bro."

"I'm getting on the plane now; the flight will take four hours. Meet me at the airport."

"I'll see you then. Cameron, thank you." Charley hangs up the phone, "My brother will be here in about four hours, we have to get moving. The first thing is we get a car rental and then we're getting us all rooms at a nice hotel. He would not like to stay in any place that doesn't have room service."

Melody smiles, "I used to be room service."

"Not today, and if I have my way never again.
