Chapter 42

When it got quiet in the house the kids all sleeping, the adults in their rooms. I sneaked down to the basement to find Papa Charley waiting for me. "Hi Papa Charley, did you want to talk to me?"

"Melody, I know you; you are hiding something. Don't tell me it is ok, tell me what is wrong."

"I have a few things that I need to figure out. I need to contact the college to see if I can change my schedule. Then I have to figure out if I can do the music, then find time for everyone. It is a lot to deal with."

"Yes, now we can fix all that. Are you going to tell me what the real problem is?"

"How do you know me so well?" Charley gives me a stern look. "He is going to have his own pups, is he going to forget mine or not want them anymore? He says no, but it is twisting in my gut that I might have to leave him to protect them. I love him so much, but I love them, and I have to keep them safe." Tears showing in my eyes, not falling just sitting there.

"You have to trust him, trust in your love."

"Trust and I don't come together too well. The only person I have trusted is you, I truly trust you, there is always a ping of mistrust in everyone else. Too many have hurt me, left me, thrown me away like I was trash. I keep waiting for the family I have come to love to decide they are going to leave me; I will let them down and they will lose interest in me."

"Little one, you have to let the past go. You need to realize the people in your life now are not like the people from your past. You need to learn to trust them."

"I am trying, it is not easy."

"Most things worth having take work, little one." He kissed me on my cheek. "Go play, send some of the tension out of you, let the music give you the peace you need." As he walks up the stairs the sound of the violin reaches out to him, sending my sorrow into the air.

A few minutes later Carley comes down the steps. "Melody, Melody." She calls. I stopped playing and look at her. "The twins won't stop crying and I can't sleep." Setting the violin down I take Carley's hand to go back upstairs.

"I'll take care of them. Come on and I will tuck you in."

"See they just won't stop."

We walk in the nursery, over to the rocking chair and sit down. "Come over here and sit in my lap."

Carley jumps in my lap. "Shh," then I sing to them. After a few minutes the twins cuddle in their cribs and fall asleep. Between the rocking and the singing Carley falls back to sleep looking so innocent in my arms. The music has lulled them all to sleep. Frank and Laurie come out of their room to see where the music is coming from. As Anthony comes up the stairs, he sees them standing there and joins them at the doorway.

Frank looks at Anthony and says, "She is very special."

Anthony smiles, "In more ways than you know."

The next day after several phone calls I get great news. "Mom, you won't believe this, but they are going to work with me at the school."

"We told you they would, you are so close to finishing."

"Being the Luna, I think had a lot to do with it, they don't want to piss off the Alpha. We all know if you piss off the wife you have a very unhappy husband."

"So, what are they doing with the schedule?"

"They are going to let me intern during the summer. After the pups are born, I can restart my hospital rounds."

"What about the cello how are you going to do that?"

"Mr. Carter has agreed to come two days a week for about two hours a day. With everything I have going on that is all the time I can spear. I still need to put in so many hours between working at the hospital and being Luna. He seemed to understand." Mom and Frank were all ears sitting in the living room listening to how things worked out.

Carley is upstairs playing in the nursery with the twins when she decides that she wants to go into the kitchen. As she comes to the top of the staircase there is a gate blocking the way, so the children couldn't fall and get hurt. Carley thinking she's a big girl climbs over the gate and trips.

"What was that?"

"It sounded like someone falling on the steps."

The three of us get up and run to the stairs. Frank was the first one there. He yells. "Her neck is twisted under her body, and she is bleeding out her nose and ears."

When mom and I reach her, mom drops to her knees, she yells hysterically, "Get a doctor. Frank run get a doctor."

I lay Carley flat on her back. "Mom you have to stop crying and Frank please calm down."

"How am I going to calm down she has to get to the hospital." Frank looks at me like I am crazy.

"Calm down, I got this." Placing one hand on the side of her neck and the other on her chest, I let the blue light leave my hands. Both Frank and Laurie stare in bewilderment.

"What the hell is going on?" Frank whispers to Laurie. Within a minute Carley is moving.

I pick her up, "Little sis, what on earth are you doing?" Setting her on her feet as if nothing had ever happened.

Carley hugs me, "You made me warm. I'm hungry, I'm going to get something to eat." Then takes off into the kitchen.

Laurie orders, "Explain this to me."

I whisper to Laurie and Frank, "I will show you later."

Charley saw the end of what I did and is mad. Standing in the hallway he glares at me, "What happened?"

Frank stammers, "She, she, she, she fixed her." Still not believing what he just saw.

Charley looks angry, "You didn't. You know better."

"She would have died if I didn't."

"Somebody better tell me what the hell is going on here." Laurie says getting everybody's attention.

"I'm mind linking my brother and Anthony. Just wait here." Charley says, as his glare is telling us not to move. "I need you to come here now! Bring Beta Branden."

Cameron and Anthony come running into the house with Branden close behind. They see me on the floor with Laurie, and Frank standing there looking dumbfounded. "What's wrong?" Anthony asks, "Why are you on the floor?"

"She broke the rule in front of them."

Anthony helps me to get off the floor as Frank helps Laurie. "Melody, why? You've been told not to. Why?"

"She was going to die."

"We could have taken her somewhere and no one would have known."

"She didn't have time for that. She wouldn't have made it two minutes. That's my little sister, I couldn't let that happen to her. I wouldn't let that happen to anyone."

"What are we going to do with them now?"

I look at Papa Charley who has been yelling, "I'm going to take some good advice and trust them. Anthony, explain to them what has happened. She was almost dead and so it took a lot out of me. I'm tired, I am going to lie down."

"I'm sorry I yelled. Do you need me to help you up the stairs?" I'm swaying side to side without an answer Anthony cradles me in his arms looks over his shoulder, "Please go to the living room. I'll be right back."

He carries me to our room to lay me in bed. While he is up there, he peeks in the nursery at the twins then asks the nanny. "The Luna is laying down would you please check on her for me, she will most likely be asleep."

Kody, seeing everyone running to Charley's house becomes worried that something is wrong, so he goes over as well. "Is everyone okay, I saw you all running over here?"
