Chapter 44

When all the guests went home, and the rest of the house was asleep Melody sneaked down to the basement. Unexpectedly Papa Charley was sitting there waiting for her. "Papa Charley, why are you still up?"

"My Little one is hiding something. She can't keep secrets from me, so tell me what is wrong."

"My mind won't let me sleep because of all the changes I have to take care of. Contacting the college and changing my schedule. Mr. Hughes wants me to play for him, then running Luna duties and the twins. It is a lot to deal with and I already have so much going on."

"You know we can fix all that. You have the backing of the pack and your family. Are you going to tell me what the real problem is?"

Tears ran down her cheeks. "How do you know me so well?"

Papa Charley gave her a hug. "You are my Little one. Talk to me."

"Anthony is going to have his own pups, is he going to forget mine or not want them anymore? He has always treated them like they were his, but this uneasy feeling is twisting in my gut that I might lose him and have to leave him to protect the twins. Papa Charley, I love him so much it hurts. It's my job to protect the twins, I have to keep them safe." The tears ran faster as she laid her head on his shoulder.

"Little one, think about how much he loves you and them now. Trust him, trust in his love."

"Trust and I don't work together well. The only person I truly trust is you. The trust I have in you is complete, others there is always a sliver of mistrust. Too many have hurt me, left me, thrown me away like I was trash. Part of me is waiting for this family that I have come to love to decide they are going to leave me or throw me away. If I let them down, they will lose interest in me."

"You have to let go of the past. The family you have now in your life is not like the others that hurt you. Take each person in your life now, watch the way they love you, learn to trust your feeling and then you can trust others."

"I am trying to do what you say, it is not easy."

"Most things worth having take work, Little one." He kissed her forehead. "Go play, send some of the tension out of you, music gives you the peace you need." As he walked up the stairs the sound of the violin reached him. Papa Charley could feel the sorrow flowing out of Melody.

"Melody, Melody." The small voice of Carley came down the steps. She stopped playing and met the little girl on the stairs. "Melody, the twins won't stop crying and I can't sleep." Setting the violin down she takes Carley's hand, bringing her back upstairs.

"I'll take care of them. Come on and I will tuck you in."

"Hear them. They won't go to sleep, and I tried to help them, and they won't listen to me." Melody couldn't stop smiling at her innocent and sweet nature.

"You can help me, come on." Melody brought Carley in the room, placed her in her lap on the soft cushioned rocking chair. The twins saw them and sat in their cribs, still fussing. Melody began to sing a sweet lullaby. The twins cuddled in with their bottles falling asleep. Carley was lying in Melody's arms, she couldn't keep her eyes open.

Frank and Laurie unknown to Melody came out of their room, they stood at the doorway listening to her. As Anthony came up the stairs, he saw them standing there and joined them. Frank speaks quietly to Anthony not wanting to wake the pups. "She is very special."

"In more ways than you can imagine."

The next day Melody made several phone calls. "Mom, you won't believe it, they are going to work with me. The school said that I can take classes until it is uncomfortable to attend them then they will send a teacher to the house to help me keep up."
