Chapter 6
"Good morning, Little one."
"Good morning, Charley. I got you some breakfast and coffee. There was a nice little diner inside. I thought it would be like those creasy spoons you see on T.V., I was surprised it was really nice in there. I didn't know what you liked so I got you a little of everything thing."
"Well, that was nice of you, thanks."
"You're welcome. My way of saying thank you." Melody finished her food happy and eager to get further away from her old life. The thoughts of her old life had her looking over her shoulder. Trying to calm herself down she thought 'We should be far enough away that they won't find me.'
"That was a good start of my day, all my favorites." Charley chuckled. "Time we get back on the road." The idea they were moving again made Melody smile. The further she gets from California and Boulder Creek the better she felt. Charley took her out of her thoughts. "You like music?"
"I adore music, any kind of music."
"Would you mind if I put some country music on? Your choice either country or Jazz."
"Either one would be great." The ride goes back to being quiet just the sound of the radio in the air around them.
"Little one, we left California, we are now in New Mexico." His voice booms out of nowhere. He saw the relief on her face, how her features relaxed, her eyes stopped darting in the rear-view mirror. "We have about three hours before we get to Socorro. That's where my next delivery is." He opened the glove box and handed Melody a spray bottle.
"What is this for?" Melody tuned the bottle in her hand wondering what it is. What Charley said next shocked her.
"It's spray to kill you wolf's smell. We might have to stop at some of the gas stations in other packs territories. Some packs aren't happy having other wolves on their land. Call the spray a precaution."
"You knew, I mean know what I am?"
"You don't have a strong smell, but it is still there."
"Why are you helping me?" She got nervous about what Charley was going to say.
"You looked so scared and so beat up. How couldn't I help you? When you feel comfortable, I would like to hear your story."
Melody looked at her hands in her lap, she glanced up at him. Her voice was no more than a whisper. "Are you going to let them know where I am if I tell you?"
Charley gentled his voice, wanting to calm her fear. "Not unless you tell me you want them to know."
"Even if you think it's a bad idea that I left and that I should go back there?" Melody was twisting her fingers, her nervousness getting worse.
"You are old enough to make your own decisions. I have no right to make you do anything you don't want. I am not saying I won't give you some advice, in the end it is your choice."
"Okay, when we get further away, I will tell you about me and what happened."
Charley, pleased with her answer, grinned. "Why don't I tell you a little about me."
"I'd like that, you must have some great stories being on the road like this."
"Where to start?" He laughs, "I was born." Both of them broke out in laughter. "I am the second born of the Alpha of our pack. I should say the old Alpha. My brother is the Alpha now. He is a good Alpha; I am proud of him. We got along growing up and still do except he hates that I am a trucker."
"Why? You seem happy driving all around the country."
"He thinks that I should of stayed at the pack and helped him lead. He even offered to make me the beta. I couldn't do that to our beta he is a good man, I didn't want the job anyway. At the time I needed space and to get away from things."
