Chapter 53
It is the night of the concert. Melody and Stephan are backstage talking and getting prepared. "How's the cello coming, have you mastered it?"
"I can show you if I can borrow this lady's cello."
"Of course you can." The two of them walk over to the cello. Melody sits and begins to play. Stephan claps his hands. "Bravo! You are this good and still have six months to go. By then you will be playing better than anyone on this stage." The lady whose cello they were using gave Stephan a dirty look.
Melody agrees with the lady and rolls her eyes at him. "I don't know about that, I will play the best I can and hope it is as good as this very kind lady here. She plays amazing." Melody didn't want to hurt her feeling; she is an exceptional cellist.
"No more of this humble side of you, people are starting to be seated. We have to get backstage."
'I hate waiting like this. It is too easy to get lost in my own thoughts.'
'You can always talk to me. I have to admit your thoughts have been making me worry lately. We can fight and you have a whole pack with you, stop going to the past and enjoy today. They are winning if they take this life from you by making you a nervous wreck.'
As Harmony was giving her a peptalk she heard them call her name. "Melody, you are needed on stage."
Stephan is on the side of the stage waiting for her. He takes her arm and walks her out. "I am excited to introduce Miss Melody Hinze, she is going to play three songs this evening. I know you will all enjoy them."
Melody holds herself proud as she goes to sit down. Then she sees him, Michael. He is in the audience, right in the front row. Her first two songs are by Mozart, her third song was to be by Bach. As she goes to play, she pauses, looks at the keys then at Michael. She turns to the audience, raising her voice so she is heard. "I have someone in the audience that requested this song. I hope you enjoy it as much as the one who requested it."
Her father had asked about her happy song earlier. She decided to play and sing it to him. "The song is called 'You were the first to love me' from Verdis Rigoletto." The words to that song are about love and hope. In her mind singing this song was her way of telling Michael she is loved and was full of hope.
Melody finished the song with a tear in her eye. Memories of what her life was before her father went crazy. No one expected her to sing, there were people crying, the song touched them so much. Stephan came out on stage she thought to escort her backstage. He whispers in her ear, "You never told me you could sing opera."
She whispers back, "You never asked me, I am not that good, so I didn't mention it." Stephan shakes his finger at her in mock scolding as she smiles at him.
He waves to a man in the wings. "Are you ready to play the violin?"
"You never said to play the violin. I sang for you isn't that enough."
His hands are going back and forth in front of him, and he shakes his head. "No! No! No! No!" He handed Melody the violin. "Ladies and Gentlemen, this extraordinary woman is now going to play the violin for you."
"This is for you, Stephan." The next three songs she plays are happy, light, melodies that brighten the mood in the theater. When she is done Melody bows to the audience who are yelling encore as they applaud.
"You are an amazing woman." Stephan says then he teases her. "If I had known you could sing like that I would not of asked you to learn another instrument. We are going to have the best concert and show the music world how extraordinary you truly are."
