Chapter 38: Coming Home
Andy's POV
I slipped the T-Shirt over Brielle's head, pulling the shirt down to her waist.
"How's that?" I asked.
"Fine." She said with a small smile. She was getting discharged today and her parents had gone to check her out while I helped her get dressed.
"Come in!" I called as there was a knock on the door. The heavy hospital door opened and her parents walked in, a nurse behind them pushing a wheelchair. I lifted Brielle out of the bed and sat her in the wheelchair. I pushed her wheelchair as her parents followed behind me. We went down the hall and out of the hospital.
"Can you stay with her? I'm going to pull the car around." I told her mom.
"Of course." She smiled. I dug my keys out of my pocket and began walking toward the car. Her dad followed me, going to pull their rental car around so his wife didn't have to walk across the parking lot. I pulled the car up to the curb and got out. I reclined the passenger seat all the way back and picked Brielle up, laying her down in the seat. A nurse came and took the wheelchair while her dad pulled the car up behind mine. I got into the driver's seat and began leaving the hospital, her dad following behind me.
We got to the house and I handed my keys to her mom who had walked over to us as soon as they had parked.
"Can you unlock the door please?" She nodded and took the keys, going to the front door. I lifted Brielle out of the car and carried her up to the front door. I walked into the house and went up the stairs. I laid her in the bed and pushed her hair out of her face.
"How are you feeling?" I asked with a small smile.
"Fine, a little bit of pain." She said, cringing.
"I'll see if your prescription is ready." I said, kissing her forehead. I left the room and made a call to the pharmacy and confirmed that it was ready. I walked up to her dad with a smile.
"Hey, can I ask a huge favor of you?"
"Of course, Andy." He smiled.
"Can you run and get Brielle's prescription? I-I don't want to leave her."
"Of course." He smiled, standing up from his seat.
"Here." I said, handing him a $50 bill.
"Nonsense Andy, I've got it." He said, pushing my hand away.
"No, I insist." I said, holding the money back out.
"She's my daughter, I'll take care of it." He said, pushing me away again.
"Please, take the money." I said, thrusting the money towards him once more.
"Fine." He said, taking the bill from my hand. I gave him the address of the pharmacy and then went back upstairs. I laid next to Brielle who was watching something on TV.
"Your dad is going to pick up your prescription." I said, wrapping my arms around her.
"Okay." She smiled, snugging close to me. We laid in bed together until I heard the front door open. I got out of bed and walked downstairs, meeting up with her dad.
"Here you go." He said, handing me the white paper bag from the pharmacy, the bottle of pills rattling around inside.
"Thank you." I said with a smile, turning to go to the kitchen.
"Oh wait, here." He said, digging in his pocket and pulling out a pile of change.
"Keep it." I said.
"No Andy, take it."
"Just think of it as the beginning of me paying you back for those plane tickets."
"Andy, you are not paying for our plane tickets. You don't need to spend your money on us."
"At times, I have more money than I know what to do with. Please, you came out here to help. The least I can do is pay you back."
"Andy, Brielle's medical bill is going to hit like a brick, your wedding is coming up, do not worry about paying us back, please. She's our daughter, we made a lifelong commitment to take care of her. You're a good man, Andy. Please, focus on Brielle. She's the one who needs you. Her mother and I are fine."
"I'll drop it." I sighed. "For now." I smirked at him and then left to the kitchen. I grabbed two bottles of water and went up the stairs. I walked into the room and smiled at Brielle as I walked to her side of the bed.
"You want your meds?" I asked.
"Please." She said, pain evident on her face. I opened the paper bag and pulled out the pill bottle. I read the dosage before pouring 2 pills into my hand. I placed the pills in her mouth and helped her sit up slightly. I cracked open the lid to the water bottle and she took a sip, swallowing the pills. I laid her back down and put the lid back on her water. I grabbed the 2nd water bottle and went to my side, setting it on the night stand before climbing into bed.
"You were down there for a while." She said.
"Yeah, your dad and I got into a small, friendly, argument."
"Argument? Andy!"
"I gave him money for your prescription which was a fight in itself. When he got back, he tried to give me the change, but I denied. I told him I was determined to pay them back for the plane tickets, but he's not letting me." I shrugged.
"I've got to get my stubbornness from someone." She chuckled slightly. "He's a proud man. He's worked hard for what he's got. He doesn't like charity."
"It's not charity! Those plane tickets had to be expensive! They're out here because I fucked up! I've worked hard for what I have too."
"Andy, my situation is not your fault."
"I-I can't shake the feeling that I did this." I sighed, tears coming to my eyes. She lifted her hand and ran her fingers through my hair.
"My symptoms pointed to flu, Andy. This was an incredibly hard catch. This was not your fault. If anyone's to blame, it's me for not seeing a doctor sooner."
"This is not your fault, Brielle." I said, tears rolling down my face.
"Okay, it's no one's fault. It happened, we need to move on."
"Okay." I sighed, nodding, not wanting to fight with her when she's in pain. I hung out with her the rest of the day until it was time for bed. I snuggled up to her and went straight to sleep, the lack of sleep from the last couple days catching up with me.
