Chapter 86: Failure
Andy's POV
*One Week Later*
"It's okay, you're okay," I repeated as I walked around the room and bounced Madi, trying to get her to stop crying. For the past few days she had been near inconsolable, not sleeping much, and driving her dad nuts. I was so tired that if I laid down, I knew I would fall straight to sleep.
"Andy, let me take her," my mom said, walking in the room.
"No, I've got it. I need to do this," I said. My parents had been offering help, but I wanted to show myself that I can be a single parent. Sometime in the near future, I will be alone at my house, and I'll need to know that I can get her to stop crying.
"Andy, you're running on almost no hours of sleep. It's no longer safe. Let me take her so you can take a nap, please."
"I need to do this mom. I'll be on my own, so I need to get used to it."
"Andy, it's just a few hours. You've been so good with her this week, you've proven you can do this on your own, now just accept the help," she said. I sighed and looked down at my wailing daughter. I gave her a kiss on the forehead and then passed her to my mom. I sat on the edge of my bed, putting my head into my hands. I heard my mom walk out of the room and let the tears fall from my eyes.
I sat there, letting myself have my moment, all the negative thoughts I had been pushing away flooding back into my brain. I heard footsteps and felt the bed sink. I felt a hand rest on my back and looked to see my mom.
"Oh Andy," my mom sighed.
"I'm failing, mom."
"No you're not."
"I couldn't even get my own daughter to stop crying!"
"Andy, she's a baby. She's not even two months old yet. That's what babies do."
"I miss Brielle," I cried as I dug the heels of my hands into my eyes.
"I know honey," she said, rubbing my back. "Why don't you lie down and take a nap, okay?" she said and I nodded. She stood up and I laid on the bed. As soon as my mom left the room, I was out.

I walked downstairs, scratching my head.
"Hello, did you get some good sleep?" my mom asked from her spot on the couch. I looked and saw Madi was laying next to her, napping.
"Yeah," I said, still a little groggy. "How long was I out?"
"Five hours."
"Five hours?" I exclaimed, being mindful of the sleeping baby.
"Yeah, I'm about to make dinner. Can you sit with Madi?"
"Yeah," I said. "Why'd you let me sleep so long?"
"Because you needed it honey, we're fine." she said, standing up. I sat down in her place, looking over at my daughter.
"Has she been asleep the whole time?"
"Heavens no. She's been asleep for maybe an hour," my mom said, disappearing into the kitchen. I looked over at my daughter with a smile.
"I love you," I whispered, lightly touching the top of her foot.

The next day I was sitting on the couch when my phone rang. I leaped for it, not wanting the sound to wake Madi. I had just gotten her down for a nap after another crying fit.
"Hello?"
"Hi!" I heard Sienna's voice.
"Oh hi, what's up?" I asked.
"Sterling and I found out the gender of our baby and we were wondering if you wanted to know?"
"Definitely."
"We're having a girl!" Sienna squealed.
"So they really will be best friends," I laughed.
"Yes! I'm so excited!"
"Good, because I didn't want to have to squash forbidden love if you were having a boy," I laughed again, making Sienna laugh.
"How have you been?" she asked. Sienna went back to California a few days after the funeral and I haven't seen her since.
"I've been okay. Madi has been protesting sleep lately, so I'm tired all the time."
"Oh, I'm sorry."
"It's okay, I'm hoping it'll start to get easier soon."
"When are you coming back to LA?"
"The current plan is the end of the month, so two-ish weeks? I don't know, I'm still kind of playing it by ear. My parents will be with me to help me get settled and then I'll be on my own. I'm still kind of waiting to feel confident enough to be on my own."
"Well, just know I'm always available to help, okay? I need the practice anyway."
"Thanks Sienna."
"Of course, bye Andy."
"Bye," I said and hung up.
