Chapter 100: Where?

Andy's POV

*One Month Later*

"Hey, how was your day?" I asked as Madi walked out to me. I could tell she wasn't happy because she didn't run to me like she usually does.

"Fine," she said softly. I grabbed her hand and walked her to the car. I took her backpack so she could get into the car and buckle herself in. I played music softly to break the silence on the drive home.

We got home and we walked up to the door. When we walked in, I grabbed her hand and led her to the living room. She climbed onto the couch and I sat next to her.

"What's up bug?" I asked, tucking her hair behind her ears.

"Why don't I have a mommy?" she asked, looking at me with tear filled eyes. I felt my heart crack as I tried to think of how to respond. She had grown up seeing Brianna and Lennon with two parents. This question had come up before, but I hadn't been ready to discuss death with her.

"I told you, some people just don't have a mommy," I said, repeating my earlier excuse. I still wasn't ready to discuss death with her.

"No, you're a liar," she said, tears now streaming down her face.

"Madi," I sighed.

"Everyone has a mommy! Everyone but me!" she cried.

"Honey, what's bringing this up?" I asked, wiping her tears from her cheeks.

"We drew our families today and I was the only one without a mommy! Everyone thought I was weird!"

"Madi, families are different."

"I WANT MY MOMMY!" she screamed, starting to kick her feet as she fell into a tantrum. I scooped her up and held her close to my body, trying to get her to calm down. I blinked away tears that filled my eyes. I felt so bad that my daughter had to feel this way, guilty almost. I finally got her to calm down and she picked up her head, looking up at me.

"Daddy, please," she begged.

"You do have a mommy," I started.

"Where is she?"

"She's in heaven," I finally said, not knowing of another way to explain this to a five year old.

"What's that?"

"It's a place that really good people go when they no longer live on Earth," I tried to explain.

"Why did she leave me?" she asked, tears pooling in her eyes again.

"Oh sweetie," I said, clutching her to my chest again. "She didn't want to leave you, I promise. Your mommy loved you so much."

"Then why did she leave me?" she asked. I sighed, sometimes it's so hard having such an intelligent and curious daughter.

"She was sick and she couldn't stay on Earth anymore. She had to leave. She didn't want to, but her body couldn't be sick anymore," I said, my voice cracking.

"Do you miss her?" she asked softly.

"Every day," I said, shaking my head. "But, she left behind the best thing."

"What?"

"You," I said, bopping her on the nose with my finger, making her giggle. "You are an exact copy of your mommy."

"Really?"

"Really," I said, nodding.

"Is there a picture?" she asked and I nodded. I stood up, lifting her with me. I carried her upstairs and into her room. The picture of Brielle and I was still hanging in her room. I took it off the wall and handed the frame to her.

"She's pretty," Madi said quietly.

"She was," I said, nodding, squatting down to her level. "Your mommy was the best person ever and I miss her every day. Your mommy may not be on Earth anymore, but she's always right here," I said, pointing to the area her heart was located. "She watches over us every day and I know how proud she would be of the amazing kid that you're becoming," I smiled at her.

"I love you daddy."

"I love you too, baby girl," I said, hugging her.
