Almost Two Years Later

Carly

It had been almost two years since I had seen Jonathan and Kyler. I had spoken to them over video a few times, which was supposed to only take six months to complete and was now taking longer as they not only had to bring in supplies and hand them out, they also had to deal with the rebels in Africa.

So I haven't seen either of them or Sergeant Caspian Hollongway since I returned to the camp last October. Hopefully, when I return this October they will be there.

I have spoken briefly to Ethan and Alijah. Well, it was a surprise to see them together. The video called me one night not long after Jonathan and Kyler had. That night I got to talk to Cas as well. My laptop buzzed letting me know that I had a call from a foreign country and I clicked onto it. "Hey Carly."

"Ethan is that you?"

"It is, surprised?"

"Just a little."

"I haven't got long, Carly. We only get to do this once a month, so I thought I'd let you know I've been deployed to Africa." My heart dropped not only were Kyler and Jonathan out there, so was Ethan. We may have had a bumpy start, but we have become close friends over time. "How's your studies going?"

"Good, we are halfway through our first year."

"Congrats keep at it."

"How are you, Ethan?"

"Good we've all been split up into teams. I don't know if you have spoken to Jonathan and Kyler, but they're out here too."

"I know." I sighed.

"That's good, at least you got to see them before they come over here. I wanted to let you know I was coming out here, but we got deployed before Christmas. It was really fast."

I nodded, understanding the army just made random decisions all the time and if you were going to eat you were going. I could hear mumbling behind him. He gritted his teeth. "I'm sorry Carly, but I have a pain in my ass that won't shut up until they speak to you."

"Who?"

He grinned. "You'll see."

"Who is it Ethan?" I asked as he despaired off the screen and a blob crossed over the screen and a set of green eyes sparkled on it.

"Surprise."

"Alijah."

He sat back grinning. "The one and only Carly. How are you? I heard you went to uni after college?"

"I did."

"Good for you, what course are you doing?"

"Counselling."

His face beamed, stretching into a broad smile. "I'm glad you're doing a course that makes you happy, Carly. I know how shit we all treated you and this will help you help others through similar situations. I'm really proud of you."

"I'm proud of you too, Alijah, you stuck to it and didn't back down. I hope you're happy doing what you do?"

"I am. I've learned so much about myself and others."

I smile glad he's finally found his footing in a place in his life where he feels himself without anyone around him who can pull him back into the life he left behind.

"We had best get off Carly. We have to make sure we get a little sleep before morning."

"Sure. It was good to speak to both of you."

"You too, Carly, night."

"Night."

The call was disconnected, and I logged out and closed my laptop. I got up and headed over to bed, lying down and closing my eyes.
