Outside, Fu Hong was talking with Fu Yu.

"Brother, do we still need to fetch water this afternoon?"

"No, we have other tasks this afternoon," Fu Yu replied.

Fetching water was usually done by the strong young men in the village, and they only did it for half the day. The other half was spent on different tasks because fetching water all day would leave them exhausted the next day.

Fu Hong, just awake and still a bit groggy, followed Fu Yu into the small storage shed and put on a pair of work gloves.

Fu Yu turned and asked, "Are you going to work too?"

Fu Hong nodded and followed him.

At that moment, Fu Wei and his wife walked out of the house. Seeing the two brothers heading out, Fu Wei called out, "Where are you two going so early? If I don't go, who will assign you tasks?"

The two men, now near the door, stopped.

Fu Wei and his wife were putting on their shoes under the eaves. Fu Xiao approached and handed them two pairs of gloves. "Aunt, what are you doing this afternoon? Can I come along?"

They both took the gloves and said, "No."

Li Xiufen gently patted her head and said, "Xiao Xiao, we're going to the wasteland this afternoon. It's quite far, and you can't come. Stay at home and keep Grandpa company."

Fu Wei added, "Xiao Xiao, you're good at cooking. Help us out by preparing meals at home."

"Okay, I'll get some water for you to take," Fu Xiao said, heading to the kitchen.

In the kitchen, she secretly filled two water bottles with cool boiled water mixed with a bit of spiritual spring water.

After preparing the water, she went outside to hand it to them and waved goodbye.

Grandpa Fu, who had been lounging on his chair, was nowhere to be seen. With everyone gone, the house was empty, leaving only Fu Xiao behind.

She closed the door and brought the dirty clothes from the well into the space for washing.

She swept the front and back yards, tidying up the yard. Satisfied with the clean and organized yard, she returned to the house, went into the space, put the dirty clothes in the washing machine, set the timer, and took out her textbooks from the study. She lay on Grandpa Fu's lounge chair, sunbathed, and read.

In Dashi Village's wasteland, the team leader assigned tasks, and each group started working with tools like hoes and shovels.

The wasteland was located around the foot of the mountain and between the river. When there were no field tasks, the village officials organized people to clear the wasteland because, in those times, land was crucial for survival.

The land was tough, and men did the heavy labor while women collected stones and other debris dug up by the men.

Li Xiufen worked with her two sons. She advised, "Be careful while working. If you get too tired, take a break. If we don't finish today, we can continue tomorrow. We don't rely solely on you two to earn work points."

Fu Hong patted his chest confidently, "Don't worry, Mom. I'm strong. We'll definitely finish first."

He started working energetically with a shovel, while Fu Yu, beside him with a hoe, worked quickly as well. They soon cleared a section of land, revealing the black soil underneath. Once the land was fully cleared, it would be time for planting.
