Secretary Xu motioned for Fu Xiao to enter. She took a deep breath and pushed the door open.

Sitting behind the desk was an elderly man with a kindly face.

He smiled warmly at her as she approached, waving her over to take a seat.

"Child, you really look a lot like your father..." he said.

Fu Xiao regarded the elderly man with respect and didn't contradict his words. While she was still pondering how to respond, he spoke again, this time with a hint of apology.

"I must apologize..." he said, his tone carrying a sense of regret.

Fu Xiao was momentarily taken aback, unsure of the reason for his apology.

The elderly man continued in a gentle voice, "I found out about your grandfather's illness and had someone look into the Mu family's situation."

He sighed, "The mission your father was assigned was one I personally dispatched. At that time, he had already taken a long leave to be with his wife for the birth."

"But the mission was so critical that anyone could have not returned. However, if your father went, there was a chance it could be completed. That mission was extremely important for our country."

Indeed, the mission was incredibly challenging and crucial, involving many lives. Despite having selected several elite soldiers, the leader was vital.

He had not initially intended for Mu Lianshen to go, given that Mu only had one son left.

Yet, upon receiving the news, Mu Lianshen resolutely went.

"Yet, he still went..."

The elderly man looked at Fu Xiao with a pained expression.

"Though the mission was completed, it unexpectedly became the fuse for your family's tragedy..."

Fu Xiao's heart jolted. She hadn't expected him to reveal this. After all, it was Mu Lianshen's duty.

What concerned her wasn't this reason; she understood Mu Lianshen had his responsibilities. What troubled her was why, after so many years, he hadn't discovered this sooner.

Suppressing her emotions, she smiled and replied, "You flatter him... He's a soldier, and it's his duty."

The elderly man looked at her with a compassionate smile, "You're a good child..."

Yet, he still felt guilty. He owed something to the Mu family. When he received this news, he wanted to see this child.

But now that he had met her, he didn't know what to say.

Although the Mu family had done the right thing, he still felt they owed something to this child.

As an outsider, he could say little.

It was better to leave it to time...

He picked up a small box from the side of the desk and handed it to her. "This is a small gift I prepared for you. Please accept it."

In his presence, Fu Xiao didn't dare refuse.

She took the box with both hands, "Thank you."

Seeing that she didn't act reserved, the elderly man nodded approvingly.

At this moment, Secretary Xu entered the room, bringing a cup of medicine that had been prepared earlier for the elderly man. "Leader, please take your medicine..."

The elderly man waved his hand casually, not turning around as he replied, "Just put it there..."

He continued speaking with Fu Xiao.
