As the sun was about to set, a visitor arrived at the Beijing detention center.
The director came out personally to greet him, "Mr. Mu, please..."
Old Mr. Mu, seated in a wheelchair and pushed by a guard, was led into the detention center.
Upon seeing the familiar yet unfamiliar figure, Old Mr. Mu waved his hand to signal the guard to step forward and then move aside.
The reason for the familiar yet unfamiliar feeling was because Mu Wanlan's appearance had drastically changed from before.
Her face was devoid of color, looking haggard and lacking the vitality she once had.
A flash of sorrow crossed Old Mr. Mu's eyes as he sighed softly.
The sigh resonated clearly in the quiet detention center.
Mu Wanlan, slumped inside, heard the sound and lifted her head. Upon seeing him, her eyes ignited with unprecedented light. She quickly crawled over and, with a hoarse and excited voice, said, "Father, have you come to save me? I truly realize my mistake. I won't do it again. Please get me out of here."
Seeing her treat him as a lifeline, Old Mr. Mu sighed, "You should be aware of what you've done. It's a capital offense. How do you expect me to save you?"
Mu Wanlan trembled at his words and quickly responded, "Father, please think of a way. I really realize my mistake..."
Old Mr. Mu's voice suddenly grew stern, "I can't help you. Whatever the law decides, you'll have to face it..."
Mu Wanlan was stunned, immediately lifting her gaze to him. Realizing that he really wouldn't help her, she fell silent. She had already caused enough trouble in the past few days and now couldn't even manage the hysterical shouting she had before. She didn't know what kind of drug Fu Xiao had given her, but these days felt like they lasted twenty years—painfully unbearable.
She suddenly felt that dying tomorrow might be a form of relief.
She looked up at Old Mr. Mu and slowly said, "Father, do you know what my brother's daughter did? She poisoned me, and also..."
Mu Wanlan suddenly became agitated, grabbing the bars of her cell and standing up, shouting with a hoarse voice, "She poisoned my Rui Rui too. Father, I may deserve death for my mistakes, but Rui Rui is innocent. I beg you, help me, help my children."
Old Mr. Mu glanced at Mu Wanlan, pursed his lips, and spoke in a deep voice, "That child, because of the sins you committed, has never been raised by us. Her surname is Fu, not Mu. Whatever she does, it's for the sake of her own family. I can't help you. I have no face to ask her for anything..."
Mu Wanlan mumbled, "But what she did must be against the law. My children haven't committed any crimes. Isn't poisoning illegal?"
"Oh..." Old Mr. Mu said calmly, "Do you have any evidence?"
Seeing her fall silent, Old Mr. Mu gave her one last long look and then said, "Greed is like a snake swallowing an elephant; desire is insatiable and leads to despair."
"Wanlan, you've been too greedy. I didn't expect my daughter to do so many things behind the scenes,"
"I've dedicated my life to the country. Your two older brothers died protecting information, and your third brother faced death without fear for the country. How could our Mu family produce someone like you..."
Old Mr. Mu's hands trembled, and he couldn't bring himself to say the last two words.
His expression turned cold and stern, "If I could, I would shoot you right now... The country is struggling, and we're working hard to build it. Yet my daughter is hindering progress... Having a daughter like you, it's as if I, Mu Hongtao, have betrayed the country."
"Father..." Mu Wanlan looked up, a sarcastic smile on her face. "Compared to the older brothers, I indeed don't seem like a Mu family member. I'm also truly a disgrace to the Mu family. But, Father, the Mu family's glory ended with the brothers..."
"Mu Lianshen, that infatuated fool, will probably be left with only that one daughter who doesn't recognize him..."
"So, Father," Mu Wanlan's expression changed, and she spoke earnestly, "Please take good care of Rui Rui. He's a boy. You can keep him with you or adopt him to my brother. At least the Mu family would have an heir..."
Old Mr. Mu squinted his eyes. "The Mu family already has successors. The country has always stood behind the Mu family. Do you think I'm one of those old fogies who only care about their own bloodline?"
"Even if your brother did wrong, I could shoot him myself. I never relied on my descendants. I have the country behind me,"
Old Mr. Mu glanced at his unrepentant daughter and then moved his wheelchair backward. The guard behind him immediately came forward to assist.
Seeing him about to leave, Mu Wanlan panicked and called out, "Father, please help your grandson. Don't let them die so young. They're innocent... Father, ahhh..."
Old Mr. Mu turned his head and said, "The most innocent of all is having a mother like you. Wanlan, be a good person in your next life..."
He then ignored her desperate cries and allowed the guard to push him out.
As he reached the door, he saw the director waiting outside and instructed, "Don't let her have contact with outsiders..."
He paused and added, "Her words these days are probably all nonsense, so don't spread them."
The director nodded respectfully, "Of course, Mr. Mu. I'll make sure it's taken care of. Rest assured, we usually don't pay much attention to what people say inside the detention center, let alone spreading it outside."
As the car drove away, the director's staff dared to speak, "Director, is it really a member of the Mu family inside?"
The director glanced back at him, "Yes, didn't you see who came just now? That was Old Mr. Mu."
"I just find it unbelievable that someone could disregard their own child's life like that..."
The director looked at the car's retreating figure and sighed, "You don't understand. Although Beijing has many people who sit idle and many second-generation political and military figures who disregard the law, some people are different. They are those who treat the country as their own life."
Such people would never do anything to harm the country.
It is because of these people's dedication that the country can continue to improve.
His father was an old revolutionary. Though retired due to injuries, he still constantly urged him to do his job with dedication, not to fear power, and not to betray the country.
As a result, he never dared to relax.
He thought that with his father's constant supervision, he wouldn't go astray.
He hoped to pass this dedication down to his own son.
Carrying on this tradition was quite meaningful...
Old Mr. Mu's car went directly to the hospital.
At the entrance, Wei Xuezhe saw him get out of the car and quickly approached. "Uncle Mu, where have you been? You didn't know I came and couldn't find you. I was quite worried."
Old Mr. Mu allowed him to help him into the hospital. Along the way, he looked around but did not see the person he wanted to meet. His expression grew a bit dimmer.
Wei Xuezhe noticed his mood and gently reassured him, "Uncle, Lianshen is a bit busy right now. He'll come to the hospital to see you once he's done."
Old Mr. Mu didn't say much. When they reached the ward, he quietly said, "You should head back. Don't let your aunt see you here. There are doctors at the hospital. Don't come here too often. Go and take care of your own matters..."
He pushed Wei Xuezhe's hand away and entered the ward.
