After putting away the poison, she left the study and went to the tea room. She made herself a cup of tea and started reading while enjoying it.

In the drawer, she saw the stack of money she had brought back from the county town and remembered that she had forgotten to give it to her family.

She decided to take it with her when she left the space, thinking it would be good for the family. It would be a reason to buy some things to improve their living conditions.

In the afternoon, Fu Xiao, unusually, got her family's approval to go with her younger brother to gather pigweed. It wasn't for the two work points but because she was feeling quite bored staying at home.

Since it was her first time gathering pigweed, she was somewhat excited and happily carried a basket as she followed Fu Kai up the mountain.

Once they arrived, she felt a bit awkward...

There was no one here except for a group of children. The oldest one among them seemed to be her.

Fu Xiao felt like she had stumbled into a kids' gathering. Most of the children were thin, with yellowed hair and sunburned faces.

Children in rural areas often grew up quickly, especially girls. By the age of five or six, they were already helping gather pigweed with their older siblings.

A young, tender voice came from behind. It was her younger brother Fu Kai, who came over and said in a low voice, "Sister, let's go over there. I know a place where there are fewer people..."

Although he was just a child, he spoke and acted with a sense of maturity. She wondered who he learned it from.

Fu Xiao smiled and said, "Alright, you lead the way."

They walked for about ten minutes in the other direction until they reached a place where the pigweed was dense and there were no people.

Fu Xiao asked the child, who was still walking ahead, "Xiao Kai, is this not good? Why are you still going forward?"

The little one turned around, looked around with his small eyes, and whispered, "I'm looking for my friend..."

Fu Xiao thought he was talking about a small animal like a rabbit or a dog, but it turned out he was referring to a person.

Just then, they saw a small boy nearby. Fu Kai ran over happily, "Little Fish, you're here."

The boy was delighted to see him but looked panicked when he noticed Fu Xiao. He hid behind Fu Kai.

Fu Kai patted him gently and said in a soft voice, "Don't be scared. This is my sister. She's a good person and won't hurt you."

Fu Xiao was curious about this boy. She had seen many village children but hadn't encountered one who looked so frightened of her.

After all, she didn't look frightening...

The boy was wearing ill-fitting clothes with sleeves and pants rolled up. The clothes were clearly adults' garments, patched all over. He was so thin that his large, bright eyes looked even more prominent. He stared at her nervously.

Fu Xiao, looking at the frail boy, raised an eyebrow and smiled, "Xiao Kai, is this your friend?"

Fu Kai nodded and pulled the boy's hand. "Sister, he's a friend I just made. He's very skilled and can find a lot of pigweed. He earns three work points a day. I want to learn from him..."

Fu Xiao was surprised. The boy was only five or six years old and could earn three work points a day?

Three work points required a large basket of pigweed. Who would make a child work so much? And he was a boy, not a girl.
