"Bang!!"

The gunshot echoed prominently in the quiet forest, and a leaf drifted slowly from the tree.

Mu Lianshen turned to look at her, offering the gun with an encouraging smile.

Fu Xiaow, though she was willing to learn, was unimpressed with his method of instruction—just shooting without any explanation was not the best teaching approach.

But she kept her thoughts to herself, accepting the gun and aiming carefully.

After a moment, she squeezed the trigger, and the shot rang out. The crow perched on the tree fell to the ground.

Mu Lianshen's face showed a hint of pride as he looked at her.

Fu Xiaow met his gaze and commented calmly, "You seem a bit nervous."

Mu Lianshen, who had been anxious since the Zhao Chen incident, let out a forced laugh. "I'm a bit uneasy. I want to teach you more, so you can be prepared when I'm not around."

"I'm afraid something might happen to you," he admitted, his concern evident.

Fu Xiaow glanced at him, realizing that he was overprotective. "You don't need to be so worried. If I encounter any trouble, I can handle it."

Mu Lianshen smiled, "I know you're capable and smart. However, in this society, there are too many cunning people."

"I want you to be able to protect yourself," he added sincerely.

Fu Xiaow accepted his concern with a smile. "Alright, let's move on. I'm hungry for some roast chicken."

With a reassuring smile, Mu Lianshen said, "Let's go find a wild chicken, and I'll cook it for you."

He took her hand, leading her deeper into the forest. The dense woods seemed even more formidable, with occasional distant howls from wolves.

Fu Xiaow couldn't help but think that there must be a lot of good stuff in these woods, perhaps even wolves.

Her remark seemed to have an almost prophetic quality.

As they ventured further, a pack of wolves appeared, slowly approaching them. Mu Lianshen quickly pulled Fu Xiaow behind him and directed her to climb a nearby tree.

Though she wanted to test her skills, his authoritative tone made her comply.

Perched on the tree, she watched attentively as Mu Lianshen faced the wolves. The first wolf lunged at him, but Mu Lianshen deftly evaded and shot it accurately.

The wolf yelped in pain but remained on its feet. Instead of reloading, Mu Lianshen drew a military dagger.

Seeing him handle the situation with ease, Fu Xiaow descended from the tree, retrieved a dagger from her bag, and stood behind him.

Using her mental power to control the movements of the second wolf, she struck it decisively with her dagger.

Mu Lianshen, turning around to see her actions, was overwhelmed with fear and worry. "An'an!!!"

His voice was filled with unprecedented tension and terror.

Fu Xiaow quickly dealt with the wolf, pulling out the dagger from its neck. She turned to him, noting his anxious expression. "I just wanted to show you that I can take care of myself. You don't need to worry so much."

Mu Lianshen hugged her tightly, his fear palpable. He closed his eyes, his voice trembling as he said softly, "An'an, please don't do this again."

He had never been so serious with her before.

Fu Xiaow, noticing his distress, hugged him back and patted his back in a soothing gesture. "I'm really fine. Let's go; we shouldn't stay here too long."

With that, Mu Lianshen led her away from the forest. Fu Xiaow felt a pang of regret for not being able to keep the wolf pelts, which would have been valuable for winter clothing.

Yet, seeing Mu Lianshen's serious demeanor, she felt a bit guilty for her actions.

They reached a lakeside where Mu Lianshen cleaned the blood from the dagger while Fu Xiaow set up a small fire.

They enjoyed a meal of rabbit stew, and Mu Lianshen gathered wild fruits for dessert. Afterward, they headed back to the car.

As they reached the road, Mu Lianshen blew a whistle-like sound, which made Fu Xiaow curious.

He explained with a smile, "This is a signal we use in the mountains. It's quite effective for getting attention."

They got back into the car, and Mu Lianshen drove them back towards the county. Just then, Zhao Chen emerged from the forest, taking a seat in the back with a tired expression.

Mu Lianshen didn't disturb him and drove straight to the outskirts of the county, avoiding the town itself.

As they approached a checkpoint, Zhao Chen commented, "They don't look like they're from Linyang County."

Mu Lianshen responded nonchalantly.

Zhao Chen sneered, "I wonder if they'll dare to stop us."

Mu Lianshen chuckled but didn't comment further.

At the checkpoint, Lin Yong recognized the military vehicle and felt a jolt of anxiety. He nudged a nearby regimental commander, "That vehicle—go check whose it is."

The commander, panicking, retorted, "Are you asking me to stop that vehicle?"

Lin Yong smiled, "You should at least go and greet them."

The commander, clearly uneasy, replied, "You're quite the genius."

And so, the tension of the moment continued to unfold as they approached the checkpoint.
