Fu Xiao reached out to take the photo. It was indeed her mother when she was young, standing next to the man in front of her now. He was wearing a military uniform, his face full of smiles. Both of them looked very happy.

"This was taken not long after I enlisted. Your mother was a doctor in a village near the military base. During a battle, there weren't enough military doctors, so she was sent to help. That's when we met," Zhai Jiu said softly, his voice filled with reminiscence and the melancholy of lost times, as he rubbed the Buddhist beads on his wrist.

Fu Xiao gently touched her mother's face in the photo. It was clear this photo had been treasured, well-preserved over the years.

She handed the photo back with both hands. If it had been a solo picture of her mother, she might have asked to keep it. However, since it also featured someone else, a memory that belonged to another person, she wouldn't ask for it.

Zhai Jiu carefully took back the photo and placed it on the table. He smiled and said, "Do you believe now that I was a friend of your mother's? Would you consider coming back to Beijing with me? You don't need to worry about Gu Qichen."

He added, "He's probably not here to make a move against the Fu family this time. But then, what is he planning?"

Fu Xiao smiled softly and said, "Thank you, but there's no need to trouble you. I want to handle this myself."

If he was a friend of her mother's, that was from a previous generation; it had nothing to do with her.

"Oh?" Zhai Jiu said calmly, "And how do you plan to handle it?"

Fu Xiao smiled again, her eyes calm and steady, without answering his question.

Zhai Jiu didn't seem to mind her silence. His face remained gentle, and he continued, "It's okay. If you ever need help, just reach out to Uncle Jiu, or you can let Shen Xingzhou know. He will assist you..."

Fu Xiao nodded.

After that, Zhai Jiu continued to chat with her in a gentle tone for a while. Their conversation was interrupted only when someone knocked on the door from outside.

Zhai Jiu glanced at the darkening sky outside and smiled apologetically at Fu Xiao, "I was planning to return to Beijing today. If I had known you were coming, I would have postponed it until tomorrow..."

Fu Xiao stood up and replied calmly, "It's fine. We can meet again some other time. You should go ahead with your plans."

After speaking, she got up and left with Fu Yu.

Shen Xingzhou escorted them to the entrance. After watching them walk away, he returned to the courtyard.

As he entered, he saw Zhai Jiu laughing heartily. When he noticed Shen Xingzhou had returned, he said with a smile, "Why are you back again..."

Shen Xingzhou gave him a meaningful look and said in a calm voice, "Uncle Jiu, was everything you said just now true?"

Zhai Jiu's smile grew even wider. "I truly was friends with her mother. You should help her out more; you have my permission to use any of my men."

He really was friends with her mother, but Mu Lianshen... tsk, what a scoundrel.

He thought back to their childhood rivalry. Growing up in the same military compound, the Mu family's military rank was higher than the Zhai family's. Because they were close in age, their families and outsiders often compared them.

When they were children, they competed in fights.

In school, they competed academically.

As they grew older, he didn't even want to join the military, but because of Mu Lianshen, that bastard, he ended up in the army.
