Fu Weilun silently followed Grandpa Fu back home.

Grandpa Fu relaxed in his recliner as Fu Weilun sat nearby. After a moment of hesitation, Fu Weilun spoke, "Father, how long has it been since you heard from Second Brother?"

Grandpa Fu, eyes still closed, answered in a calm voice, "He hasn't been in touch. You know his missions are often classified, and he can't even make phone calls."

Suddenly, Grandpa Fu furrowed his brow and opened his eyes, looking at Fu Weilun. "Why are you asking about your Second Brother?"

Fu Weilun smiled and replied, "It's nothing. I just need to make sure the medicine Xiaoxiao prepared gets to the right place. I want to contact Second Brother to see if he's in the military district."

Grandpa Fu nodded, "Well, you should contact him directly. Just ask where would be suitable for sending the things from home. If he's busy, let Second Brother's wife handle it. Besides, aren't the two boys studying in the military district?"

"Alright, I'll call him."

Noticing the cane discarded by the door, Fu Weilun remarked with a smile, "Father, you seem much better. You don't even need the cane anymore."

Grandpa Fu's face beamed with pride as he responded, "Indeed. Xiaoxiao's medical skills are remarkable. I can now exercise for an hour every morning and my legs don't hurt even on rainy days. I sleep comfortably at night."

Seeing his father looking significantly younger, Fu Weilun also smiled warmly. It felt good...

He slightly raised his lips and said lazily, "Father, would you like to play a few games of chess with me?"

Grandpa Fu perked up at the mention of chess, sitting up from the recliner. "Are you serious?"

"Of course," Fu Weilun assured.

"Xiaoxiao, come out," Grandpa Fu called out loudly. When she appeared, he smiled and said, "Xiaoxiao, go get the chess set from my room. I want to play a few games with your Third Uncle."

"Okay..." Xiaoxiao replied.

She entered Grandpa Fu's room, wrapped the chess set in a cloth with a chessboard pattern, and brought it outside.

Outside, she saw Grandpa Fu and Third Uncle setting up a small table with the cloth spread out and the chess pieces arranged. They began their game, each holding a set of pieces, while Xiaoxiao watched. The board was clearly divided into Chu and Han territories, but she couldn't understand the game.

She served two cups of hot water, adding a bit of spring water, and placed them on the low stool next to the table before returning to the house.

After several days of rain, the bedding felt musty.

She decided to hang out the bedding to air it out, including the bedding from Grandpa Fu and Third Uncle's rooms. Sunlight helps remove dust mites, and she liked the fresh smell of sun-dried bedding.

She wasn't sure about the exact nature of that smell. She had read somewhere that it might be the scent of dust mites being burned, but it was hard to verify.

With limited space on the clothesline, she could only hang three quilts; the rest would have to wait until tomorrow.

After drying the bedding, she took a book from her room and sat in the sun to read.

Noon passed quickly, and before she knew it, it was lunchtime.

The food was almost ready. Aunt and she had been busy—one preparing the fire and the other cooking. Soon, they had a meal of stir-fried rabbit meat, stir-fried roe deer meat, braised fish, three meat dishes, and two vegetable dishes.
