But ultimately, the next day's strong wind interrupted her plans to return home.

The wind was so fierce that it ravaged the flowers and trees in the small courtyard of the Zhai residence.

Zhai Jiu, observing the increasing gusts from the small living room, turned to look at the worried Fu Xiao and said with a smile, "There's no rush. With such strong wind, the roads won't be safe. Let's wait another couple of days."

Fu Xiao nodded, staring at the howling wind outside the window. Although she was reluctant, she had no choice.

The wind was indeed fierce. In the morning, the Zhai family mentioned that a tree as thick as a bowl had fallen outside the military district.

Picking up a book to distract herself, Fu Xiao tried to calm down. The sound of the wind was tumultuous, like a roaring tide crashing against mountains.

The storm lasted an entire day and night. By the next morning, the wind had died down a bit.

Stepping outside, she saw remnants of broken branches and tree trunks scattered everywhere. In the military district, many guards were busy cleaning up the fallen branches. The road leading to the main road had been cleared.

Mu Lianshen and several others from the district were busy organizing and clearing the damage caused by the wind. He was dressed simply in a white shirt and black pants, working on a dangerous tree that needed to be removed.

Some walls had been damaged by fallen trees, and many trees had been broken halfway, needing to be cut down to prevent further harm.

Seeing her, someone nudged Mu Lianshen, who turned to see her and, after handing his tools to a nearby person and brushing off the dirt on his hands, walked quickly over to her with a warm tone. "What are you doing here?"

Fu Xiao noticed the cuts on his hands and replied calmly, "I came to see if there was anything I could help with."

Mu Lianshen frowned. "There's nothing you can do. Go back."

He tried to gently push her away but then noticed his hands were dirty and retracted them awkwardly. "Go back. The wind is still strong, and many trees are unstable. It's too dangerous for you."

As he spoke, he shielded her from the blowing leaves.

He pulled over Fu Yue, who was helping stabilize a large tree, and said, "Take her back. We don't need you here."

Though not necessary to obey, Fu Yue was concerned for Fu Xiao's safety and led her back to the Zhai residence before heading out again.

Fu Xiao sat in the courtyard, her spiritual energy sensing the activity outside. With no tools available, the work of cutting trees was done manually, and the scene of so many people stabilizing a tree while avoiding damage to buildings was both laborious and dangerous.

The loud crash of the most dangerous tree being cut down startled Fu Xiao, who checked with her spiritual energy to ensure no one was injured before looking away.

A short while later, Mu Lianshen came in and sat beside her.

Fu Xiao looked up at him and asked softly, "Do you need something?"

Mu Lianshen rolled up his dirty shirt sleeves and smiled. "I heard from your brother that you're preparing to go back home..."

Fu Xiao poured him a cup of tea and pushed it towards him, then said, "Yes, I'm a bit homesick. I'll be heading back either tomorrow or the day after."

Home?

Yes, the place she called home was a thousand miles away and not here.

Mu Lianshen's hands, resting on his knees, trembled slightly. He hid his emotions behind the tea cup as he took a sip and said softly, "I want to see you off... and visit your mother. May I?"
