Mu Lianshen felt a lump in his throat, his lips twitching uncontrollably as tears began to fall. It was a pain so profound it seemed to pierce through his very soul. He struggled to keep his voice steady, but the tears kept coming, flowing down his cheeks despite his best efforts to restrain them.

"Shu Shu, I'm in so much pain... why am I still alive?" he lamented, his voice choked with despair. "I thought I would die... I even regretted not destroying the letter I wrote before the mission. That way, if I died, you and the child could start a new life."

He wiped away his tears, a bitter smile playing at his lips. "I didn't expect that I would survive, yet that letter still reached you..."

...

When Fu Xiao woke from her dreams, the sun was already setting.

She quickly got out of bed, opening the door and stepping outside.

Fu Hong, who had been waiting by the door, immediately took her hand. "Sister, are you alright? Are you hungry or thirsty?"

Fu Xiao managed a smile. "Second Brother, I'm fine."

Fu Hong breathed a sigh of relief. "That's good to hear."

He gave her a hug and murmured, "Sister, next time, be sure to take me with you. I missed you so much."

"Alright..."

Not seeing anyone else in the courtyard, she asked, "Second Brother, where's Grandpa?"

Fu Hong smiled. "Grandpa is resting in his room. The others are in the backyard."

Fu Xiao headed towards the backyard, noticing the guards chopping wood and her two uncles chatting nearby. She looked around but didn't see anyone else.

Frowning, she asked, "Second Brother, where is he?"

Fu Hong's expression darkened. "He's gone to the back mountain..."

The back mountain?

Fu Xiao's mind raced, her fingers nervously tapping her palm.

The cemetery...

Fu Yu approached, gently touching her forehead. "What are you thinking about?"

She snapped back to reality, looking up at him with a smile. "Nothing much."

"If you want to go, just go," he said.

Fu Weikun, walking towards her, noticed her conflicted expression but maintained his usual gentle tone. Fu Xiao's gaze wavered for a moment, then she nodded. "I'll go have a look."

Turning, she made her way to the back mountain.

As she stepped out of the house, Grandpa Fu came out of his room, looking around.

He asked Fu Hong, "I heard your sister's voice. Where is she?"

Fu Hong shrugged and replied gruffly, "She went to the back mountain..."

Grandpa Fu frowned but said nothing further.

In the kitchen, Li Xiufen overheard and came out wiping her hands. "I've finished preparing the meal. Should we wait for her?"

"No need. Let's eat first. We don't have to wait for them," Grandpa Fu said, walking towards the dining room.

Li Xiufen looked at Fu Weibo with concern. "Shouldn't we at least save some food for the children?"

Fu Weibo, helping to serve the food, smiled. "Just leave some for them. There's no need for the whole family to wait."

"Alright, then. I'll leave more meat for the kids."
