"Wang Mei?"

Looking at her, Fu Xiao's eyes were slightly cold.

"Xiao Xiao, you're back!" Wang Mei rushed over to Fu Xiao with an anxious tone, "Xiao Xiao, I've been coming by every night looking for you. Why haven't you been answering the door?"

Noticing Fu Yu beside her, Wang Mei's face turned red with embarrassment, and she awkwardly adjusted her clothes. Her voice became affected as she asked, "Xiao Xiao, who is this?"

Her gaze was fixed intently on him.

Fu Yu's eyes grew cold, and his expression turned unfriendly as he looked at her with disgust. Whispering in Fu Xiao's ear, he took her bag, used the key to open the door, and went inside.

Wang Mei's eyes remained glued to him as he entered the house before she turned her attention back to Fu Xiao. "Xiao Xiao, you still haven't said who he is?"

"He's my brother, here to take me back to our hometown."

"What? Going back to the hometown?"

Her tone was incredulous, and she was visibly flustered as she continued in a desperate manner, "How can you go back to the countryside? What about me? If you go back, what will I do?"

"What?" Fu Xiao raised an eyebrow, "Do I need your permission to return to my hometown? Who are you to decide that?"

"That's not what I meant!" Wang Mei realized she had misspoken and quickly backpedaled, "I'm just worried for you. You're from the city, how will you manage in the countryside?"

Her agitation escalated as she grabbed Fu Xiao's hand. "Xiao Xiao, once you go back to the countryside, you'll be a rural person. I heard that people in the countryside often go hungry. Didn't you see my cousin who went to the countryside two years ago? When she came back for the New Year, she was barely recognizable. You have a house and a job at the hospital here, why go back to the countryside? Have you lost your mind?"

Fu Xiao looked at Wang Mei's agitation calmly and said, "But there's no one left in my family here. I'm still a minor; I need to return to my relatives back home."

"What are you afraid of? I'll be with you. Once you're of age, you can get a city job. It's something many people dream of," Wang Mei said with a smile, trying to sound persuasive. But her eyes betrayed her greed.

Fu Xiao shook off her hand and prepared to enter the yard. "No need. There's already someone coming to pick me up. I'll be leaving for home in a few days. You can leave now; I won't see you off."

She bypassed Wang Mei and was about to leave.

Wang Mei grabbed her hand again. "Can't you understand? If you go back to the countryside, all the money you have will be useless. Once you're there, it'll be hard to come back. What if they sell you off for a bride price when you grow up?"

"I'm telling you, those people from your hometown are all scammers..."

Even though Fu Xiao had already entered the yard, she heard Wang Mei's provocative words from the door.

Fu Yu returned, grabbing Fu Xiao's hand and shielding her behind him. His eyes were cold, and his gaze was like a blade as he directed his anger at Wang Mei. "Get lost."

His tone was filled with disgust.

He pulled Fu Xiao into the yard and glanced back at Wang Mei with a chilling look.

"Bang!!!"

The sound of the door slamming shut startled Wang Mei, making her face turn white and then green with embarrassment.
