Chapter 30: Idle Chat

Lunch was prepared by Aunt Li Xiufen. She used some tomatoes from the backyard and made egg noodles with the fresh eggs collected from the coop that morning.

A large bag of loose noodles bought from the department store went into a big pot, making a full meal.

Aunt Li also cooked the two field mice she brought back yesterday. Of course, Fu Xiao didn't eat them; she found the idea of eating mouse meat unacceptable. She had only a bowl of noodles, while the men in the house finished the mice.

After lunch, Fu Xiao sunbathed outside for a while. When everyone went inside for their afternoon rest, she returned to her room and entered the space. However, she didn't rest; if she napped during the day, she would struggle to sleep at night. Instead, she spent time reading.

Her grandfather was a great man; he must have seen countless patients to compile so many difficult cases. The treatment methods were recorded in great detail, making these notes invaluable to any doctor.

She carefully studied these cases, noting down obscure parts in a notebook for further research later.

Fu Xiao was so engrossed in her reading that she didn't notice someone calling her. When she finally came back to her senses, she heard Fu Hong calling her again and quickly left the space, opening her room door.

"Second Brother, what's up?"

Fu Hong, smiling, asked, "Were you sleeping?"

She shook her head. "I was too absorbed in my book. Did you need something?"

Fu Yu took over, "Nothing important. He just finds things to do. Keep reading your book."

Seeing her two brothers change into rain boots, she asked curiously, "What are you doing?"

Fu Hong cheerfully replied, "This afternoon, we're going to open the river channel for irrigation and maybe catch some fish. I wanted to see if you'd like to join."

Fishing? That sounded interesting.

She was about to agree when Fu Yu calmly said, "The water is too cold. You can't go."

Aunt Li Xiufen, sitting in the sun, also said firmly, "Yes, girls shouldn't be exposed to the cold. Have you ever seen a girl go to the river?"

She shot Fu Hong a disapproving look. "You fool, hurry up and go."

Fu Hong gave her a grin, and the brothers left together.

Aunt Li waved her over, and Fu Xiao walked over and sat next to her on a small horse mat.

"Xiao Xiao, what book were you reading at noon? Are you thinking about going to school?"

Sitting beside Aunt Li and watching her sew, Fu Xiao whispered, "I was reading the medical books left by Grandfather."

Li Xiufen's fingers, busy with the needle and thread, paused. She thought for a moment and then quietly advised her, "Keep those books at home. Don't take them out, okay? We're careful with such things here."
