The door was unlocked?

Mu Lianshen frowned, wondering why this child hadn't locked the door while she was sleeping.

In reality, the latch was opened by Fu Xiao's mental power when she woke up startled by his arrival. She wanted to see what he was up to.

Seeing the quiet figure lying on the bed, Mu Lianshen's anxious heart finally calmed down.

He walked lightly, almost noiselessly, to the bedside, crouching down. As he looked at her lying there, he was suddenly pulled back into the dream he had just had. In that dream, the girl had been lying on the bed, alone, with no breath left.

He reached out to touch her hair but saw her eyes open.

Caught in the act, Mu Lianshen quickly withdrew his hand, a look of apology on his face. "Did I wake you?"

Fu Xiao sat up on the bed, propping her pillow behind her, and half-leaned against it. Her cat-like eyes fixed on him with an unreadable expression as she said softly, "What are you doing here in the middle of the night?"

Mu Lianshen smiled gently, "I heard you went to the Mu house today. I woke up and thought I'd come check on you, in case you were worried."

"Oh," Fu Xiao replied noncommittally, nodding. "Well, you've seen me now. You can leave."

Mu Lianshen hesitated, then cleared his throat. "An'an, remember to lock the door when you sleep. The Zhai family is different from your home. There are outsiders here; you must be careful. Otherwise, you might as well not stay at the Zhai house. I've already transferred ownership of my courtyard to you; you can stay there if you prefer."

Fu Xiao suddenly smiled, looking at him with a playful glint in her eye. "I'll be going back in a couple of days. I've accomplished my purpose here and don't need to stay any longer."

Since she said that, Mu Lianshen kept his gaze on her, unblinking.

The prolonged scrutiny made Fu Xiao uncomfortable, and she finally spoke up. "Do you need something?"

Mu Lianshen composed himself, regaining his calm demeanor. He smiled and said, "It was just a bad dream. I was a bit disoriented. Seeing you made me feel more at ease."

Fu Xiao played with the quilt, seeming thoughtful. "What kind of dream? Was it about me?"

Mu Lianshen sat down on the floor by her bed, looking up at her. "It was not a good dream..."

"Tell me about it," Fu Xiao said with a hint of interest.

Mu Lianshen hesitated before speaking softly, "I dreamt that you were deceived in Shanghai and ended up in a terrible situation..."

But it was just a dream; in reality, you're doing well...

Hearing his brief recount of the dream, Fu Xiao's smile faded, her eyes flashing with a sharp intensity.

She leaned back against the headboard, lazily tilting her head to look at him, her smile gone. "Really? That's quite an interesting dream."

Mu Lianshen looked at her, "It was just a dream. You won't end up in that kind of situation."

Just a dream?

Fu Xiao's hands clenched subtly as she suddenly spoke, "If I hadn't called my third uncle at that time and had stayed in Shanghai, waiting for news from home, do you think it would have been too late?"

Mu Lianshen stiffened, lowering his gaze.

Fu Xiao continued, "Do you know how many people were watching me back then?"
