"You... don't seem to dislike me anymore?"

Fu Yu glanced back at Shen Xingzhou. The moonlight filtering through the window cast a soft glow on his sharp features.

Fu Yu suddenly recalled the fight they had when they were young, where Shen Xingzhou had cried and shown a range of emotions from anger to tears. Now, Shen Xingzhou's face always wore a mask of pretense. Over the years, Fu Yu wondered what experiences had led to such a change.

He smiled and asked, "Why do you ask that?"

Shen Xingzhou pressed his lips together, offering a bitter smile. "I know that you all haven't really liked me."

Perhaps because of his numerous past experiences, Shen Xingzhou had a sharp sense of how people felt about him—whether they liked, disliked, or hated him. Whether during childhood or as an adult, he could tell that Fu Yu and his siblings were never fond of him.

Under the night light, half of Shen Xingzhou's delicate features were hidden in shadow, while the other half was illuminated by the cool-toned light, making him appear more enigmatic.

Fu Yu narrowed his eyes, observing his expression. The youth before him had lowered his gaze, giving off a strong sense of melancholy.

Fu Yu spoke softly, "I don't particularly dislike you, but I do want you to look into my sister's situation. I'm grateful and consider you a friend. We can get to know each other better over time."

With that, Fu Yu turned and went back into his room.

Shen Xingzhou stared at the closed door, murmuring, "A friend?..."

After a while, a faint smile appeared in his eyes.

Back in his room, Fu Yu turned on the dim yellow light and briefly surveyed the simple layout: a bed with a straw mat and a not too thin or thick quilt, covered with a plain but clean sheet. There was also a small wooden table.

Without changing his clothes, Fu Yu lay down on the bed and began to think about the documents his uncle had given him—data on grain production and seed requirements for the next planting season. Since his father was the brigade leader, Fu Yu was familiar with such reports and knew there was a lot of misleading information in them.

The night was cool and quiet, with the wind rustling the trees in the courtyard, adding to the stillness of the surroundings.

The next morning, as the first light of dawn appeared, Fu Yu walked out of his room, stretching and yawning. He knocked on the door of Shen Xingzhou's room.

"Shen Xingzhou, I'm heading out."

Just as he was about to leave, the door opened, and Shen Xingzhou, with slightly messy hair, walked out. He looked at Fu Yu and asked, "Why are you up so early? Something going on?"

Fu Yu replied calmly, "I'm going to the dorm to pick up my sister for breakfast."

"Then wait for me. I'll go with you," Shen Xingzhou said, heading back to his room.

Fu Yu frowned, reluctant to wait, but since he was staying at Shen Xingzhou's place, it seemed impolite to refuse. So, he patiently waited.

When Shen Xingzhou reappeared, dressed and groomed, he said, "Let's go. I'll lead the way."

He went to the bicycle, pushed it to the door, and handed Fu Yu the key to lock up.

They quickly arrived at the county committee dormitory. Shen Xingzhou waited outside while Fu Yu went up to knock.
