In the following days, Mu Lianshen stayed at the Fu family's home.
He frequently visited the back mountain cemetery or stayed at home helping Fu Xiao sort herbs. Occasionally, he would join her in working in the fields.
Now, everyone in the village knew about him. That car that had gone out that day belonged to him. His face resembled Fu Xiao's so much that anyone could tell their previous relationship.
With this knowledge, the villagers discussed the remarkable relative of the Fu family, creating quite a buzz. However, they dared not discuss it openly, as Mu Lianshen's intimidating presence kept them at bay. Their gossip was conducted behind his back.
Mu Lianshen was aware of the gossip, but he didn't seem to mind; in fact, he seemed quite pleased. It appeared he was gradually integrating into Fu Xiao's life, not just physically but emotionally as well.
Recently, Grandpa Fu seemed less opposed to him. He started giving him tasks, which mostly involved dirty and strenuous work. Whether it was intentional or not, Mu Lianshen undertook these tasks with enjoyment, without any complaints.
One day, Grandpa Fu directed him to chop firewood on the mountain. Mu Lianshen put down the broom he was holding, grabbed an axe, and headed up the mountain.
Fu Xiao watched him with a twitch at the corner of her mouth. The small warehouse was already filled to the brim with chopped firewood—enough to last the household for at least a month. This was all firewood Mu Lianshen had collected from the mountain recently.
It was clear that Grandpa Fu was deliberately making him work hard. Fu Xiao shot a resigned glance at Grandpa Fu, who, noticing her gaze, cleared his throat and turned away awkwardly. Fu Xiao smiled wryly and didn't say anything; after all, it was a case of mutual agreement.
She grabbed a backpack from the small warehouse and went outside.
Grandpa Fu called after her, "Where are you going?"
"Going up the mountain to collect herbs..."
Grandpa Fu shook his head with a smile and said thoughtfully, "The firewood is all chopped. What else should he do next?"
His gaze shifted to the outhouse in the backyard, and a sly smile appeared on his face.
Fu Xiao headed to the place where she had previously seen many herbs. After gathering herbs there, she prepared to move to another spot and happened to see Mu Lianshen chopping dead trees.
She walked over to him...
Mu Lianshen, hearing the movement behind him, turned sharply with a keen look. Seeing her, the hostility in his eyes vanished, replaced by warmth.
He smiled and asked, "Here to collect herbs?"
Fu Xiao nodded, her gaze moving from the pile of wood he had already chopped to him. "We have enough firewood at home, so don't chop any more..."
"I've never done these things before," Mu Lianshen said with a smile. "It feels quite new, and I'm feeling very peaceful inside."
"I think I'm quite content staying in the countryside like this."
But it wasn't time for him to rest yet...
He put away the axe, bundled the firewood, and set it aside.
Looking at her, he asked, "What other herbs do you need? I'll accompany you..."
"The home has all the herbs we need," Fu Xiao replied with a faint smile. "If you see any, just collect them; otherwise, it's a waste to leave them on the mountain."
