Chapter 55: "Quasi-Great Power" Federated States of Cuadrado
〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜
Approximately 15.000 km northeast of Japan
Under a cloudless blue sky, a paddle steamer named Carma made her way across the blue sea, trailing black smoke. This massive vessel, with her black hull lined in white and a steady plume of smoke rising from her chimney, exuded an overwhelming presence.
Flying above the steamship Carma were several creatures known as "fighting dragons." These fighting dragons patrolled the skies, vigilant in their role of guarding the Carma.
Fighting Dragon
As the name suggests, these are dragons specialized for combat.
Originally, they were wyverns, but they were transformed into artificial creatures by forcibly injecting them with highly pure magic extracted from high-grade magic stones. There are very few places where high-quality magic stones of such purity can be obtained, as the magic extracted from these stones is potent enough to alter the nature of a creature. Furthermore, only high-end civilizations possess the technology to extract this concentrated magical energy from the finest stones. Its transfer to low-end civilization nations is generally prohibited, as it could spark unintended conflicts.
The fighting dragons are about 7 to 8 meters in length, making them slightly smaller or similar in size to wyverns. They possess sharp fangs and claws, which they use to tear apart their prey. Although they can also fire bursts of flame, their magical power is slightly weaker than that of wyverns, requiring additional time to harness it.
While quite ferocious by nature, they can become obedient dragons with training, similar to dogs.
On deck, sailors were busy with tasks in various places. Moving briskly among them, hands clasped behind his back, was a man, the Deputy Foreign Affairs Director of the Hardique Empire, Sirius Marcucci.
He placed his hand on the portside railing, gazing at the blue horizon, the endless blue sky, and the fighting dragons flying above, contemplating the events to come.
'Hehehe... Once Japan sees this massive ship and our fighting dragons, they'll be eager to establish ties with our Empire... Hehehe.'
Sirius couldn't suppress his grin. Noticing his eerie smile, the sailors couldn't help but feel uneasy, though they quickly returned to their tasks.
"Deputy Director! S-sir, it's an emergency!"
A soldier in military uniform ran up to him.
"What's the matter?"
"The Federated States of Cuadrado has just declared war against us!"
"Hm!? ...Well, this is a surprise."
Everyone present froze at the soldier's words. The Federated States of Cuadrado, a quasi-great power, was a nation that could easily have claimed one of the vacant great power positions.
"...But Cuadrado isn't the only one, is it? Since they've declared war, there must be others joining them."
"Y-yes! ...Our former vassal states, the advanced nations of Naugora, the Republic of Larionov, the Kingdom of Erlange, and the Kingdom of Ali-Wamba, along with three lower civilization nations, have defected to Cuadrado."
