Land of Owari

Kondō and the survey team arrived at the capital of the Land of Owari, also known as the "City" itself, under the guidance of Kiara, the leader of the Savage Realm Border Guard's First Unit. They had crossed many mountains and valleys, traveling on roads that could barely be called such, but somehow managed to arrive safely. Normally, there was a well-maintained highway, but due to certain circumstances, it was now mostly unusable.

However, even upon arrival, a massive wall of mist stood before them. It felt strangely similar to the one that had the Second World from where they had been before.

Then, one of Kiara's subordinates took out a small bamboo flute and blew it. Despite the sound being made, no melodic tune was heard; it was only a faint, hushed, air-like sound. After the subordinate finished playing, a small tunnel appeared in the mist and the wall. The far end was shrouded in a mist-like haze, but without hesitation, Kiara and her team stepped into it, and Kondō's group followed behind.

"Don't stray from the path. If you leave the opened route, you'll be sent back to the entrance," Kiara's voice called from the front, though her figure had already disappeared from sight. Five minutes had probably passed since then. Following the path carefully, they managed to emerge from the mist tunnel. Stepping out into the open, it felt like they were finally basking in sunlight after a long time.

A well-maintained highway appeared beyond the mist tunnel. Before entering the tunnel, the path had been rough and difficult to walk on.

"Excuse me, what exactly was that mist tunnel?"

"That fog is magical mist expelled by the Ancient Dragon, Orglard, that resides in our country. That Elder—well, rather, the mist he exhales has mysterious powers. One of these powers is creating a mist barrier that prevents outsiders from entering its territory. But, don't worry! We, the people of Owari, are allies of that Elder!"

Kondō recalled the massive wall of mist that had separated their world. When the royal family of the demi-human nations arrived at the Nakanotori Peninsula, they too had traveled on a dragon that expelled mist. The Dragon King had mentioned that, although it was an Ancient Dragon, it was still young by their standards, and its mist only enveloped its immediate surroundings.

Ancient Dragons were mysterious entities that even the Dragon King didn't fully understand. It was said that only a handful of dragons lived for over a thousand years and could awaken the "ancient" powers. There were even theories suggesting that these dragons were a race that ruled the world long before humans or demi-humans existed. However, the truth of these theories was still unknown.

Thinking about the Ancient Dragons that could create such a wall of mist, Kondō wondered if they could ask them more about this mysterious phenomenon. However, since that would only be possible if communication could be established, he knew that it was important to avoid doing anything that might irritate the dragons.

"What's that bamboo flute for?"

"Huh? Oh, this? It's made from the Elder's fangs. Only a very few people carry these flutes."

"And how is it that the Ancient Dragon and the people of Owari are allies?"

"Well... Ah, it's coming into view. That's the main gate to enter the castle town."

As one of Kiara's subordinates pointed in a direction, Kondō looked to see a large stone wall standing. The stone wall, built using the dry-stacked method, was about 5 to 8 meters tall and stretched on endlessly, surrounding the castle town. Inside, watchtowers were built at regular intervals. Continuing further, a large gate appeared before them.
