Guest Room, Hardique Empire
In the opulent guest chamber offering a panoramic view of the imperial capital, Quandua from the Garm Empire lounged casually in a chair. At his feet rested a securely locked case.
"Good grief... all this fuss over a single rock—what exactly is that nation thinking?"
Grumbling under his breath, he glanced at the case on the floor. Procuring its contents had cost considerable effort, but the thought that all of it would pay off today gave him a slight sense of relief.
"Now then... the matter of the elf. It seems like it's still going to take some time. I suppose I'll wait it out for now. Fortunately, the palace's magic barriers make the air far less polluted than outside, so it's quite comfortable here."
He leaned back in the chair, satisfied. At that moment, someone knocked on the door. Startled, he grabbed the pistol he had left on the table and called out to the person beyond the door.
"Who's there?"
"My apologies for disturbing you at rest. This is Sonny, Imperial Family Advisor."
"...Come in."
Quandua unlocked the door to reveal Sonny standing there. After offering a slight bow, Sonny entered the room. Quandua, recognizing him, returned the pistol to the holster at his waist.
"Ah, it's you—the operative from Lemuria."
"You're observant. However, I am not Lemurian. I hail from Cardua."
Hearing the mention of Cardua, Quandua furrowed his brows.
"Cardua? ...The Kingdom of Cardua, which, after being Sanctified by Lemuria, is now essentially a colony? Well, this is unexpected."
"Yes, I am from that Kingdom of Cardua. Nearly 200 years ago, our nation was purified through the Sanctified. Now we enjoy the blessings and grace of the one true and absolute god, Meruela."
Quandua felt a twinge of pity for the conviction in Sonny's words but refrained from voicing it. He knew better than to utter misplaced sympathy—such sentiments could backfire in dealings with individuals like Sonny, potentially leading to unpleasant consequences.
"I see... well, leaving that aside, what brings you here?" Quandua asked directly.
Sonny quietly responded to the question.
"I'll be frank. Freya—the elf we attempted to abduct—was not successfully captured. Furthermore, I must inform you that our nation is likely on the brink of defeat. In fact, we're nearly in a state of total collapse."
Hearing this, Quandua muttered with a troubled expression.
"Hmm... that is problematic. How am I supposed to explain this to them?"
"In any case, remaining here is dangerous. You would be wise to return to the Second World as soon as possible. We will also leave as soon as our tasks are complete."
"Right... I understand."
Suddenly—
BOOM!!! BOOM-BOOM-BOOM!!!
A massive explosion reverberated throughout the palace. The source was unmistakably within the palace itself. Both Quandua and Sonny were visibly shaken by the unexpected turn of events.
