Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is unfortunately rainy today.

Raindrops and gusts of wind lashed against the glass windows of the towering skyscrapers, while cars passing along the streets splashed through puddles at the roadside. Pedestrians carried umbrellas of various colors and shapes, creating a lively, albeit wet, scene.

Signs, traffic lights, and advertisements have now evolved into holographic displays. The red and blue lights, the glow of advertisements, and the shimmer of signs reflected off the raindrops, softly illuminating their surroundings.

In this era, cars can autonomously navigate to their destinations at speeds of up to 60 km/h.

This feature is invaluable, especially for the general public, people with disabilities, and the ill. Yet, even with advanced AI technology, perfection is elusive.

On days of bad weather like this, slip accidents still occur, though they have significantly decreased compared to the time when manual driving was the norm. Nevertheless, there remains a persistent subset of people who insist on manual driving. As a result, even vehicles equipped with autonomous driving functions often find themselves under manual control. To address this and more, humanoid drones constantly patrol urban and rural areas alike. These are known as...

WALKERs.

Developed through rapid advances in robotics over the past 30 years, WALKERs have now reached their 5th generation. Their fluid movements are virtually indistinguishable from humans. Equipped with robust carbon-based artificial muscles and high-level AI systems, WALKERs are deployed for various purposes.

Currently, the WALKERs stationed in the interior regions of the country are of the older 3rd generation, yet they still perform exceptionally well.

One WALKER patrolled the rainy streets of Tokyo without the need for an umbrella. Being water-resistant to a significant depth, rain posed no threat to its operations. This particular unit has ventured to the outskirts of Tokyo, reaching areas dotted with rice paddies and farmland. As it neared the edge of its programmed patrol zone, it began to turn back when suddenly...

"Some... someone... help, ple... please..."

Detecting the sound from somewhere, the WALKER immediately began analysis. In less than 0,1 seconds, it identified the source as a human voice and determined the situation was critical, based on the elevated heart rate.

The voice came from beyond its programmed patrol area.

Nevertheless, the WALKER swiftly sent an emergency report to its assigned police headquarters, requesting approval for a program modification to operate outside its designated area. At the same time, it contacted the nearest fire department. Once authorization for the program change is granted, the WALKER has already begun sprinting at full speed toward the target location. With physical capabilities far surpassing human limits, the WALKER arrived at the scene in no time to find a swollen river.

In the river was a car that appeared to have slipped in. Someone is still inside, desperately pounding on the door to escape. However, the water pressure has sealed the door shut, and water is steadily filling the vehicle.
