Midnight
Chinatown in an alley in Tokyo
In a Chinatown located in a back alley on the outskirts of Tokyo, home to poor Chinese immigrants living in Japan, a large number of people reside. Among them are illegal immigrants who came to work, those who have committed crimes and are being hunted by the authorities, and members of the mafia.
The environment is unsanitary, and the occasional sounds of arguments and chaos are common in the alley. For the people living here, these scenes are part of daily life, so hardly anyone pays them any mind. For criminals, the best place to hide is among people... and this alley is the perfect hiding spot.
In this alley lived a man. He lived happily with his younger siblings, who were significantly younger than him. His name was Yang Wenhai, the Number Two of the Japanese Phantom Wolves branch.
Yang held a bag in one hand as he walked through the maze-like alleys of Chinatown. It was there that he encountered a shabby man.
"Hey, boss... You seem in good spirits tonight."
"...Li?"
The man was one of the residents of the Chinatown alley, named Li. He was an information broker employed by Yang, a longtime friend who provided various pieces of information.
"Anything new?"
"Heh, it's the same as always. Your younger siblings are doing well. Kids sure grow up fast, huh?"
"They're 10 years old today."
"Oh, in that case, I'll have to prepare a present for them later!"
"Before that, here's a gift for you."
Saying that, Yang handed Li a thick envelope from the bag he was carrying.
"Heh, thanks for this."
"I'll be counting on you in the future."
Yang patted Li on the shoulder and then continued on deeper into the alley. Li silently watched his back until he disappeared from view.
"...Sorry, but our relationship ends here today."
At that moment, a homeless man appeared behind Li.
"...He's going to his hideout, right?"
"Y-yeah... no doubt about it."
"What about the other residents?"
"I've already sent them all out of here... I did as you told me... right?"
Li looked at the homeless man with a greedy gaze, and the man silently handed him a memo.
"Here's the money we promised."
Li took the memo, then left the scene. As he quietly muttered, he watched the direction Yang had gone.
"I actually like you quite a bit... but they say you have to go with the flow when you're dealing with big forces, right?"
・・・
Yang stood in front of the door to a shabby apartment, first knocking twice, then pausing before knocking once more.
Knock, knock... knock
The door opened, revealing a young boy and girl who greeted Yang.
"Big brother!"
"I'm home, Hao-Ran, Mei-Fan."
The two were Yang's younger siblings—Hao-Ran, the brother, and Mei-Fan, the sister. Their mother, a prostitute who catered to poor clients, gave birth to the two and then disappeared with a customer. Since then, Yang has taken on the role of both their older brother and guardian.
