Agardo was momentarily frozen in place. He never imagined he would encounter Japan here... and in this way.
"Um... are you alright?"
"!?"
Agardo snapped back to himself at Diplomat Horiuchi's words, feeling a bit embarrassed for freezing up. He resumed the conversation with Horiuchi and the others.
"Ahem... I-I'm fine. Pardon the delay; I am Agardo Velch, son of Dicardo Velch, President of the Federated States of Cuadrado, and younger brother of Edgardo Velch. And this is..."
"I am Sumief Smork, a Lieutenant General in Cuadrado's military, assigned to serve as Sir Agardo's escort on this mission."
The two straightened up and introduced themselves respectfully, placing their fists over their right chests.
"So... Mr. Horiuchi, what brings you here?"
"I apologize for disturbing you so late... I had heard from King Gima today that an old ally was visiting the country, and I wanted to at least greet you. I never expected that this old ally would turn out to be the Federated States of Cuadrado."
"Hm? ...Mr. Horiuchi, what is your nation's relationship with the Kingdom of Eir?"
"Just recently, our countries signed a friendship treaty. In other words, we are now allies."
"Oh! That's wonderful!"
"Yesterday, I heard much about Cuadrado from His Majesty. From what I gathered, it sounds like a magnificent country! I do wish I had known then that Cuadrado and Eir were allies as well."
"We've also heard rumors about Japan... the mysterious rising nation that defeated the Thestania Empire. I've always wanted to speak with a diplomat from your country."
After a moment of contemplation, Horiuchi's face lit up as he offered a proposal to Agardo.
"What do you think of this!? How about a meeting tomorrow with representatives from Japan, the Federated States of Cuadrado, and the Kingdom of Eir?"
"Huh!?"
"This would simply be a meeting to strengthen our bonds and get to know each other better; there's no ulterior motive here. Depending on how the meeting goes, we would like to establish diplomatic relations with your country."
"Hmm... It does sound wonderful. However, I'm afraid... we do have some urgent business—"
"That sounds perfectly fine, Sir Agardo!"
Sumief suddenly interjected, joining the conversation.
"G-General Sumief!?"
"Our mission was to deliver a letter to the Kingdom of Eir, but meeting an envoy from the famed Japan... life is full of surprises, isn't it?"
"Y-yes..."
Sumief then leaned over and whispered to Agardo.
"If we leave a good impression on Japan and possibly even form an alliance, it would surely delight Sir Edgardo!"
"Yes... this could be a perfect chance to achieve even more than my brother had hoped for."
"Um... is something the matter?"
"Oh, no, my apologies. After discussing it with General Sumief, we have decided that our business isn't so urgent after all... let's hold the three-country meeting tomorrow!"
"Excellent! Thank you very much!"
The two shared a firm handshake. Thus, it was decided that tomorrow, Japan, the Kingdom of Eir, and the Federated States of Cuadrado would hold an urgent meeting to strengthen their friendship.
