Unbekannt Road, Nakanotori Peninsula, Dom Continent
A caravan of wagons moved steadily along a paved road illuminated by the moonlight, traversing a wide grassland overgrown with lush greenery. On their wagons were numerous large wooden crates labeled "Iron & Copper."
However, this was no merchant caravan transporting goods to Unbekannt. The group was actually a mercenary unit hired by the Hardique Empire. Their mission, in exchange for a significant sum, was to launch a surprise attack and annihilate both Unbekannt and the SDF base within the Nakanotori Peninsula of Japan. Needless to say, the contents of the crates were neither iron nor copper but were packed with mercenaries, hungry for a bloodbath.
Having successfully passed through a checkpoint near the border of the Domain of Kudum as planned, they assumed they would reach Unbekannt without incident.
"Alright... We'll make it at this rate."
The mercenaries suppressed their excitement and continued onward. Before long, in the far distance on the horizon, they saw a large light.
"There it is! That must be Unbekannt!"
They urged their wagons onward toward the light. But as they drew closer, they realized something was amiss.
"What's that?"
As they approached, the source of the light became clear: it was a checkpoint.
At the end of the paved road stood a gate. A separate, unrelated caravan was already ahead, engaging in a conversation with SDF personnel stationed there. Beside the gate stood several small buildings, along with what appeared to be a watchtower. Parked nearby were a Type 82 Command and Communications Vehicle (CCV) and a Light Armored Vehicle (LAV), while SDF members and CFWs were scattered everywhere.
The area was brightly illuminated by abnormally powerful searchlights, making it impossible to approach stealthily. The road was lined with wagons in a long queue, and beyond the path, there was nothing but open grassland. Straying from the road would only make them conspicuous and guarantee detection.
Overhead, unmanned reconnaissance drones patrolled the skies.
A towering chain-link fence, nearly 5 meters high, stretched across the horizon, reinforced with barbed wire at the top. The only route through this heavily fortified area was, without a doubt, the checkpoint.
'I've never seen a checkpoint like this before... No one has. But it's obvious. Someone who has never seen this place even knows that this place is impenetrable.'
Most likely, every mercenary hiding among the wagons shared this sentiment. But they had not entirely failed to account for such contingencies. They had prepared themselves to some extent.
The caravan ahead cleared the checkpoint and proceeded through the gate. The mercenaries' wagons moved up and came to a halt before the gate, where SDF members approached as expected.
"Good evening! Working late, I see. Great effort!"
"Oh, not at all! You guys are working hard too. Thanks for your service!"
The mercenaries responded to the smiling greeting with equally polite smiles. In the soldier's hand was an ID authentication device.
"Please show me your ID card."
