Away from the Second Defensive Line, Arad Great Forest
In a small clearing amidst the dense, overgrown forest, several soldiers of the Hardique Empire stood alongside Major General Muont. They were awaiting the arrival of their collaborator.
"...They've arrived."
A faint silhouette of one carriage emerged and approached their position. The person holding the reins was none other than Sigis. After halting the carriage near Muont and his men, Sigis dismounted, lowering the deep hood that had concealed his face.
"My, my... I'm glad you kept your promise, Sigis."
"...Mr. Muont."
"Did you bring the item we agreed upon?"
Sigis opened the door of the carriage. Inside was Freya, bound with ropes, a gag strapped over her mouth, unable to move.
"Mmmph! Mmm! Mmmph—!"
Upon confirming Freya's presence, Muont looked on in satisfaction and turned back toward Sigis.
"It seems you've fulfilled your end of the bargain. Very well."
"...This settles it, doesn't it? You'll grant me asylum in your country now?"
"Of course. Men! Escort our guest with the utmost care!"
Following Muont's orders, the soldiers began guiding the carriage deeper into the forest. Sigis climbed back into the carriage and let out a sigh of relief, knowing the arrangement had gone as planned.
He turned to his side, his gaze falling on a young elf girl lying across the seat, her expression pained.
"...Melia, just a little longer... You'll be cured soon. The medicine that heals all ailments will be ours."
"Hah... Hah... Hah..."
The girl's name was Melia, Sigis' only daughter. Her flushed face betrayed her high fever, and her labored breathing and limp posture made her condition clear. She lay motionless, unresponsive to her father's words. Sigis gently stroked Melia's head, tears welling in his eyes. Then, his gaze shifted toward Freya, still bound.
"...Princess... You told me earlier to 'choose the path I wouldn't regret.' So I made my choice: I abandoned my country to save my daughter. But surely, you think of me as a fool... a traitor."
"........."
Freya looked closely at Sigis. For the first time, she noticed how haggard he appeared. It was evident he had struggled deeply between choosing his daughter or his nation.
"...But, Princess, Melia is my only family... my treasure and my reason to live! You can hate me if you wish. I've betrayed my nation... and Alfheim's fall is inevitable. I'm prepared to live with the resentment of all my people."
"Mmmph! Mmm—pwaah!"
Freya managed to free the gag from her mouth and spoke to Sigis.
"...Sigis... I never realized the depth of your suffering... your torment. I'm sorry."
Sigis was taken aback by her words.
'Why... Why is she apologizing? Why? It's all because of me...'
As the carriage continued deeper into the forest, a loud clattering sound abruptly broke the silence, and the carriage came to a halt.
"What was that? Have we already arrived?"
