First Defensive Line: High Walls of Ulbargo, Halidom of Alfheim
The High Walls, formed by an intricate intertwining of stone and giant tree roots, encircle the capital city. If these walls were to be breached, the capital would fall victim to devastation. And now, that very crisis was unfolding.
"FIREEEEE!"
DA-DA-DA-DA-DA-BOOM! BOOM! BARABABABABABABA! RATATA! DOOOOM!
The massive army of the Hardique Empire was launching an all-out assault on the High Walls of Ulbargo. Unlike the terrain encountered so far, the area was filled with large, complex root formations. As a result, the magic steam landships concentrated their attack on the southern gate, where the roots were sparse, while the rest of the forces—Chimeras and infantry—pressed forward on other fronts.
"Anywhere is fine! Just bring that old wall down already!"
BOOM! CRASH!
The unleashed bombardment struck the High Walls directly, but apart from some minor crumbling of rock, they remained intact. Standing approximately 15 meters tall, the ancient walls were covered in patches of moss, but the tree roots reinforcing them absorbed the impact of the landship shells, leaving them unfazed.
The Hardique Empire's army maintained relentless pressure, leveraging overwhelming firepower and manpower. Yet, the elves of the Halidom of Alfheim fiercely resisted, successfully stalling the advance. Against all odds, the Halidom seemed to hold the upper hand in the battle.
"LOOSE!"
A rain of arrows, fired from atop and within the High Walls, descended upon the advancing forces of the Empire.
"Gah!"
"Screeee!"
The elven archers, natural-born marksmen, rarely missed their targets. Anyone who exposed themselves, even briefly, was met with almost unerring precision.
The closer the Imperial soldiers approached the walls, the higher the accuracy of the elven arrows. The battlefield was littered with the corpses of fallen Imperial troops, their bodies piling into grim heaps.
"Damn it! Why can't we use the Cyclops to smash those walls already!?"
"We're trying! But the surrounding moat is wide and deep, and the Cyclops is being shot down before it can reach the High Walls!"
Looking around, armored Cyclopes and Grimms were indeed making their way toward the walls, attempting to break through. However, the moat surrounding the fortress impeded their progress, causing them to falter in the water. As they slowed, they became easy targets for the elven marksmen, who picked them off with deadly precision.
Even clad in armor, there are always gaps to exploit. The elves aimed their arrows with precision, targeting those vulnerabilities.
GROOOOOAAAR...!
One by one, the chimeras let out anguished cries and collapsed on the spot. Even the mages wielding Magic Manipulators fell prey to the unrelenting rain of arrows.
"What about the gate? What's its status!?"
"It's... it's still the same as before..."
Imperial soldiers attempted to destroy the gate of the High Walls using Novas and landships. With deafening roars, explosions engulfed the main gate.
