Chapter 2 - A visitor at the inn
Moiraine returns to the inn where someone is already waiting.
Moiraine didn't know what to say when she watched Lanfear leave. Her mind was spinning, her heart running, and she wanted to vomit. What had she been thinking?! Making a deal with a Forsaken?! Especially with the one who loved the Dragon Reborn and wanted him to herself?!
But Rand had to get Callandor before another Forsaken found him. And if his friends decided to stay with him... Rand would do anything to protect his friends. It would be impossible to convince him to do the right thing. Besides, they all were ta'veren. It would be exhausting to deal with them longer than necessary. She couldn't say it had been a pleasure to travel with the Emond's Fielder from Falme to Tar Valon.
"Moiraine-"
"Let's return to the inn," Moiraine interrupted Lan.
She felt his anger through the bond. He was clearly not convinced that making a deal with a Forsaken was a good thing, and Moiraine was having the same doubts. But what other options did they have? They had tried countless times to convince Rand about the necessity of going to Tear. Yet, the boy refused to listen. Would he understand if his friends were in danger?
Quickly, the woman of the Blue Ajah left the balcony. She needed to think. Could she really send a Forsaken after Egwene, Perrin, and Mat? Well, she did send the Red Ajah after Mat to free him of that bloody dagger from Shadar Lagoth. But Egwene and Perrin? They didn't deserve whatever Lanfear had in store for them.
Especially Perrin hadn't done anything wrong. The boy was always so polite and calm. Not once had he argued with Moiraine or talked back to her. The simple thought of sending Lanfear after him made Moiraine's stomach twist painfully. That poor boy.
The Cairhien woman reached the street and was hit by the noise of people rushing through the streets or wanting to sell stuff. For a moment, she considered getting back upstairs. The noise wasn't good for her head, which was already starting to hurt because of all the problems that were piling up in front of her.
A firm hand landed on her arm while a strong arm moved around her back, pulling her close against a familiar body. Lan. Immediately, Moiraine's heartbeat started to slow down, and she exhaled.
Yes, there were countless problems ahead of her, but she wasn't alone. She had Lan by her side, who helped her wherever he could.
"Deep breath," he murmured, while trying to shield her from the eyes of everyone around them.
The Aes Sedai chuckled, then leaned against her Warder and took a deep breath. Inhaling Lan's unique scent helped her to clear her head. At first, they would return to the inn to be there when Rand and the boys returned. And then, she could think about possibilities that would scare the Emond's Fielder a little. IF she decided to allow Lanfear to help, she would make sure the woman wouldn't cross the line.
Once Moiraine was certain she could stand on her own two feet, she let go of Lan, taking a step back. "Let's go back to the inn."
The uncrowned king of Malkier watched her as if he was trying to figure out if it was safe to let her walk or if she needed a longer break. But then, he nodded.
Relieved, Moiraine grabbed her dress, lifting the front so she wouldn't stumble over it, then continued her path to the inn. Lan didn't hesitate and fell in step with her.
None of them spoke. Quietly, they moved through the crowd, though Moiraine could feel Lan's anger through the bond. She watched him from the corner of her eye and saw how his facial muscles moved. He was clearly chewing on his anger, and people moved out of their way once they looked at Lan. The man looked like he wanted to kill someone.
