There's a lot going on in Moiraine's head, and it's hard not to know when something will happen.

Motionless, Moiraine lay in her bed, staring out of the window. The sun was slowly rising, bringing another sunny day. It felt wrong. How was it possible that the sun was shining? An innocent child had lost her life last night. Shouldn't the sky be at least... cloudy?

There are barely any clouds in the Aiel Waste. It doesn't even rain much here. So, I guess it's probably normal that the sun rises even after such a tragic death.

It was hard to erase the image of the devastated Rand from her mind. He had barely known the young girl, yet her death had hit him hard. How should Moiraine prepare him for that? Would he understand that more people would die in the Last Battle? Would he understand that he couldn't save all of them? Or would he take all deaths personally? Light! He wouldn't survive long if he didn't stop feeling responsible for every death.

The Car'a'carn shall spill out the blood of those who call themselves Aiel as water on sand, and break them as dried twigs. Yet the remnant of a remnant the Car'a'carn shall save, and they shall live.

If Rand was supposed to kill countless Aiel, perhaps the same would happen to the people on their side of the Spine. Was it possible that only a few would survive the Last Battle, rebuilding what had been there?

Lan and Nynaeve will take care of Malkier. It's already been lost for such a long time. But what about the other cities? Siuan will take care of Tar Valon and the White Tower. Elayne... is also a powerful channeler. She will follow her mother on the lion throne, rebuilding Caemlyn. Perrin already went back to the Two Rivers. Perhaps it is his mission to rebuild Manetheren.

Mat's role was unclear. Even if he survived, Moiraine couldn't imagine which city he would choose to rebuild. It was more likely he turned into a gleeman, telling the story of the Dragon Reborn to everyone who wanted to hear it.

And Egwene... Once Moiraine would've said the girl's place was in Tar Valon. But the woman had changed since Falme. Was it possible she would stay in the Aiel Waste? Would she be the connection between the 'Wetlanders' and the Aiel?

Sighing, the woman of the Blue Ajah closed her eyes. Light! What was she doing?! They had bigger problems at hand than imagining who would survive the Last Battle and what part they would play during the rebuild.

I'm sending a little surprise. Let him handle it.

Sammael. Lanfear had informed another Forsaken where he would find Rand. Why? Was she really convinced the boy could survive a battle with a Forsaken? Yes, he had killed Ishamael in Falme, but Moiraine still believed it was because Ishamael had underestimated the boy and his skills. Or perhaps the boy had won because Rand's friends had gotten attacked by the Father of Lies. Or had it been their presence? Was Rand stronger with his friends by his side?

Whatever it had been, Moiraine was still surprised by Lanfear's decision. Or was there another reason? What if it hadn't been a test? What if the Daughter of the Night had hoped they would cage Sammael?

The Aes Sedai opened her eyes again. Was that possible? Had last night been a trap for Sammael? But why would Lanfear want another Forsaken trapped? He would never help them. What kind of use had a trapped-

Moiraine's eyes widened. No. That couldn't be true. Sammael hated Lews Therin. He would never do anything for the Dragon Reborn.

I'm sending a little surprise. Let him handle it.

Was that why Lanfear had warned Moiraine about her plan? Did she know Moiraine would use a shield on the Forsaken? But how? The Cairhien woman hadn't known how to tie off a shield. She had needed several attempts until she had finally gotten it.
