Chapter 3 - I have to apologize
Riding through a thunderstorm. What could go wrong?
The uncrowned king of Malkier watched the sleeping Cairhien woman. It wasn't a peaceful sleep. She was tossing around, though she didn't wake up.
Did you really believe Siuan becoming the Amyrlin Seat wouldn't affect you, Moiraine?
The Aes Sedai didn't need to say anything about what was going on with her. Her Warder was no fool. He had always wondered how Moiraine would handle it once her lover became the most powerful Aes Sedai in the White Tower. But Moiraine had always dismissed his worries. Lan had assumed she had been too busy planning and preparing, not thinking about the consequences to come.
Of course, Lan had tried to talk to Moiraine about those worries, but she hadn't listened. The Malkier had never spent much time in the White Tower or had gotten a proper Warder training. Perhaps that was the reason why she had never listened. Or perhaps Moiraine had believed she had thought about everything. That woman was a brilliant planner but terrible at thinking about herself.
No matter what the reason was, Moiraine wasn't feeling well. Her panic attack in Tar Valon had already been overwhelming. Yes, it had been stupid to push her for answers. Lan knew that now. So he had moved on to watching her quietly. It hadn't been easy because Moiraine had masked the bond, but Lan had endured it. Luckily, the Cairhien woman had unmasked the bond before going to bed, making his night shift way more comfortable.
Lan should be sleeping. He knew that. They weren't surrounded by enemies. They had their own room, and Moiraine had put her wards in place. Everything was fine, except...
The Malkieri lifted his head to look at the Cairhien woman in the bed. She wasn't tossing at the moment but whimpering. And sometimes, she even murmured Siuan's name.
No. He couldn't go to sleep. Not if Moiraine was having trouble sleeping. Lan wanted to be there for her when she woke up.
At that moment, a window flew open, caught by a curtain before any damage or a loud sound was heard. But Lan was on his feet anyway, rushing to the window as if someone could jump through it. It was pitch-black outside, and a strong wind hit the man's face. A storm was coming.
Suddenly, the sky lit up for a moment. Lan grimaced when he realized what that meant. That storm also brought thunder. Hopefully, it was far away-
The air cracked loudly, then the growling sound of the thunder was heard. So much for hoping the storm was far away from them. Apparently, it was passing right over them.
The uncrowned king of Malkier turned to the Cairhien woman. She hadn't woken up from the thunder but had definitely heard it since she was tossing her head from side to side.
Carefully, Lan closed the window and ensured it was truly closed this time. Moiraine needed her sleep. Sadly, he couldn't do anything against the thunder. All he could do was hope the storm would be over soon.
Again, the sky lit up, and it felt as if the thunder followed only a heartbeat later. It sounded as if it was right above them!
"Siuan!"
With a gasp, Moiraine pushed herself into a sitting position. This time, the thunder had been too loud, though the Aes Sedai was clearly struggling to wake from her dream.
Quickly, Lan rushed to the bed. Perhaps he could calm down Moiraine, helping her to go back to sleep. But her feelings were a mess.
"Breathe, Moiraine. Breathe."
