Chapter 2 - Countless injuries
Moiraine tries to heal everyone.
It wasn't fun to sit in Moiraine's room, listening to how the Emond's Fielders were suffering from Lanfear's treatment. There were thuds as if someone was falling out of bed over and over again or hitting the wall, and sometimes a scream as if someone was having a nightmare. But no one called for help. Surely, someone would call for help if they needed it, right? Or came running to Moiraine if Lanfear had gone too far?
Lan couldn't stop running up and down before Moiraine's window, and the woman of the Blue Ajah had to stop him multiple times from leaving the room.
It had been especially hard for the Warder when they had heard Nynaeve's voice calling Mat's name. Apparently, the Wisdom was still downstairs with the boy and was trying to pull Mat out of whatever Lanfear had prepared for him.
Moiraine wondered what the Daughter of the Night had done with the cards. Would they attack Mat? Was it possible that the boy was fighting against flying cards? Or were they trying to flee from him? Was the boy running around the inn, trying to catch his cards? And what-
"Lan!"
The Aes Sedai's eyes widened. That was Nynaeve! And she sounded like she was in pain! Why should she be in pain? No one was supposed to get hurt! Lanfear was supposed to scare them, not hurt them! Besides, Moiraine had told the Forsaken that she should leave Nynaeve alone!
"Lan!"
Of course, the uncrowned king of Malkier didn't hesitate when he heard the Wisdom's cries. He drew his Malkieri blade, then stormed out of the room. This time, Moiraine didn't try to stop him, and she doubted she would've been able to stop him. Rage filled the bond. Lan would try killing Lanfear if the Forsaken was downstairs with Nynaeve.
Quickly, the woman of the Blue Ajah followed her Warder outside. Whatever Lanfear had done to the Emond's Fielder, it would end now. Moiraine had given her enough time to scare those kids.
Although the Cairhien woman longed to check on the Dragon Reborn, she decided to follow the Malkieri downstairs. She had to check on Nynaeve first, if she didn't want to anger Lan any further. But what she saw made her shiver.
Lan stabbed a man with his blade – a man Moiraine hadn't seen ever before. In the next moment, the young woman from the Two Rivers sank into Lan's arms, but the Malkieri hurried to place her gently on the ground. Even from afar, Moiraine could see that Nynaeve was bleeding.
In the meantime, Mat seemed to break out of a dream. He had been standing at the bar, not moving or noticing Lan or that other man. Had Lanfear kept him caught in a nightmare, unable to help Nynaeve?
"Nynaeve? Nynaeve!"
The boy seemed uninjured, so Moiraine ignored him. She passed him, then embraced the One Power, already weaving a Healing weave.
"What happened to her?!"
Moiraine didn't ask for permission. She didn't try to count, but it was obvious that the strange man had stabbed Nynaeve a few times. Her clothes were soaked with blood, and she was trembling while Lan held her down.
"What happened?"
Lan's eyes seemed to stare a hole into Moiraine's head. When she looked at him, she saw the same look in his eyes that he had when he was ready to kill someone. But that wasn't all. His rage pulsed in the bond, and it was partially directed at her. The Malkieri didn't say anything, but she could feel it.
