Moiraine prepares herself to talk to Sammael, and Lan isn't happy about her plan.
"At least allow me to go inside with you."
Moiraine sighed. How often did they have to talk about that? She knew it was hard for Lan to leave her side, and it didn't help that she intended to face a Forsaken. But she wouldn't risk letting her Warder near Sammael. She didn't want to inform the Forsaken about Lan's identity.
"I'll go alone."
Frustrated, the uncrowned king of Malkier walked up and down in front of the exit of Moiraine's cave. The Cairhien woman was still preparing herself to leave the cave. She and Lan had stayed longer in bed, enjoying each other's silent company. They knew their moments together were counted and wanted to save the time they had left.
But they couldn't stay in bed all day. Rand, Egwene, and the Wise Ones had decided that they wanted to try capturing Lanfear today. As if it wasn't already enough to have one Forsaken locked up. Yes, Moiraine had shielded Sammael and had tied off the shield, but she knew too little about that new ability. What if she had done something wrong? What if Sammael was able to break free? After all, he was a bloody Forsaken, who was alive for three thousand years!
And yet... if there was even the slightest chance that Sammael could be useful to them, she had to take it. Rand needed a teacher. Someone who knew how to use Saidin properly. Sammael was clearly not Moiraine's first choice, but there was no one else there. Logain Ablar, the False Dragon, was too far away and too close to the madness. No. It had to be Sammael.
Her stomach twisted painfully at the simple thought of talking to that creature, but it had to be done. And she couldn't take Lan with her. It was for his own protection.
"It's for the best," Moiraine explained while combing her hair. "I don't want the Forsaken to know too much about you."
"They already have their eyes and ears everywhere."
That was probably true. Moiraine didn't wish to know how many Aiel belonged to the Dark. Egwene had said that she had been attacked by Aiel last night when Sammael had appeared in Rand's cave. Moiraine didn't know if the Taardad had found those bodies yet, but it meant that there could be Darkfriends among them too.
"That's true. But I don't have to give them more information than necessary."
"But it's alright that you will be in danger?!"
Moiraine opened her mouth to tell Lan that she was dying soon, but then stopped before one word could leave her lips. No. The Malkieri didn't like it when she talked about her death. He still refused to believe that her death would happen so soon.
"I'll be alright."
Lan growled. "You don't know that."
Sighing, the woman reached for her bag to put her brush back inside. Suddenly, one of Moiraine's envelopes fell out of her bag. Quickly, she grabbed it to push it back inside. But before she could do that, her eyes noticed the name she had written down. It was Lan's letter!
He still hasn't opened it. He knows it is there but hasn't made a move. How does he do that?
"What is it?"
Quickly, Moiraine pushed the letter back into her bag. She didn't want to start another argument. Or that Lan asked her to tell him in her own words what she had written down.
"We should go. We don't have much time before the Wise Ones will call for us."
"And what exactly do you think that Sammael will tell you?"
