Chapter 1 - Two different conversations
Moiraine and Lan go into the city to meet Verin. But she won't be the only one they're meeting.
"You made it."
Moiraine and Lan stopped whispering when Verin arrived. The sister of the Brown Ajah wore a black cloak with a hood over her head to cover her hair. Apparently, she had tried to stay unnoticed while moving through the streets of Tar Valon. Now, she pulled back her hood to reveal herself to the pair.
The Cairhien woman grabbed the Malkieri's arm and squeezed it gently. She nodded at the crowd below them, and he nodded. Lan would keep an eye on the crowd, warning Moiraine in case an Aes Sedai came looking for Verin or anything else would catch his attention.
Then, Moiraine moved over to the Brown Sister. "Did you doubt I would show up, Sister?"
"After today..." Verin sighed heavily. "I don't know what I expected. I still try to understand what exactly went wrong."
"The Black Ajah exposed itself and attacked the White Tower."
Verin snorted. "Exposed itself? They killed countless Aes Sedai and Warders. The Tower took a pretty big hit. And I'm afraid we lost more than just a few good people."
Moiraine furrowed her forehead. "What else happened in the Tower?"
"The Black Ajah stole our most powerful weapons. We still don't know where they went, or if there are more of them." Moiraine grimaced. So, Liandrin did escape with the rest of the Black Ajah. Blood and ashes! "Seems that the Last Battle grows ever closer, now that the Dragon has declared himself. I assume he is here with you."
"I have no intention of allowing Rand al'Thor anywhere near the Aes Sedai." Was Verin actually believing Moiraine would hand Rand over to the White Tower after everything that had happened in Cairhien? Now that they had found out that the Black Ajah had infiltrated the White Tower?
"You still think it matters, what you intend?"
Anger rolled through the bond, but Moiraine sent her calm to ease Lan's anger. She knew he didn't like it when someone spoke to her in a disrespectful tone. But Verin was an Aes Sedai, who seemed shaken to Moiraine's eyes. She didn't mean to insult Moiraine.
"Before he declared himself, Rand was under your care and your control. But now you have to cede all of that, trust his decisions."
Moiraine wanted to laugh. Trusting Rand's decisions? He may have declared himself the Dragon Reborn, but he was still a boy. "Ah, you overestimate his progress."
"Today, I was attacked by a woman I watched grow from girlhood." So, Verin had been attacked by the Black Ajah, too. "I trusted Nyomi without question. And now my sister's clever mind is a shattered mess because I believed I had the measure of a person. And I did not."
Moiraine didn't know what to say. Adeleas. What did the Black Ajah do to her? Verin and Adeleas were close. Finally, Moiraine understood why Verin was so upset.
"And I know that you believe in the Dragon Reborn, Moiraine. But you really need to ask yourself, can you believe in Rand al'Thor?"
The Blue's first thought was that she wanted to assure her sister that she believed in the boy. But the words stuck in her throat when she remembered how that silly boy had treated her since they had reunited in Falme.
With each day, Rand had become bolder and turned into a brat. Lan hadn't been amused by the tone the young man had started to use around Moiraine, and Moiraine also had to keep her calm around Rand. But she trusted him... Right?
