Moiraine remembers a moment from Fal Dara after she had been shielded.
Trigger warning: depression (if I'm missing a trigger warning, please let me know in the comments)
I gave those three of Lan's family a name in another story of mine ("Lanfear's revenge"). Someone had asked for a meeting of Moiraine and Kera. It wouldn't have fit into the timeline of "Lanfear's revenge", so I decided to give them a moment here.
It didn't take long for Lan to notice Moiraine's disappearance. After all, he could feel through the bond how she moved away from him.
In Tifan's Well, he hadn't been able to notice her disappearance because the bond had been masked. Though she was still impressed by how fast he had been at following and saving her from the Fade.
A shiver ran over Moiraine's back when she remembered how those other two Fades had appeared behind Lan.
Lan!
She had tried to warn him, but... he had fought bravely. If only she had been able to help him with the One Power. Sadly, no matter how hard she had tried, Saidar had refused to come to her. Shielded! And she hadn't known about it!
There had only been a few moments in her life when she had been really scared. And all of those moments had been when Lan had been close to death.
Logain's cave. When the blade had cut his throat, and Lan would've bled to death without Nynaeve's help.
And then, that Fade attack. Lan had been there because of her. It had been horrible to watch him getting injured. Every cut had cut deep into her heart. If only she had released him in Fal Dara. Then none of that would've happened.
But instead of freeing him, Moiraine had allowed Lan to stay with her when that wonderful man had refused to leave her. Nynaeve had asked him to go with her to Tar Valon, but Lan had declined.
Sighing, Moiraine leaned against the stone pillar of the balcony where she and Lan had met Lanfear before, while her thoughts returned to Fal Dara.
Moiraine felt like a coward. It felt wrong to hide, watching her sisters heal the injured soldiers of Fal Dara. Sadness filled her heart whenever she saw one of her sisters using Saidar. Her fingers itched at the view, wishing they could also reach out to touch the One Power. It was still there, but she couldn't touch it. Tears burned in the Blue's eyes, and she quickly turned away, fleeing the scene.
It had been a week since Lan had returned with her from the Eye of the World. Alanna, Anaiya, and some Yellows had arrived yesterday, working with Nynaeve closely to help all those who got injured during the attack.
Lord Agelmar had been the first one to be healed by a Yellow Sister, but wasn't acting like himself since he had heard of his sister's death. It had been a shock to see Lady Amalisa's burned-out body. What had she been thinking?
No one paid attention to Moiraine, and she was thankful for that. For the last couple of days, she had tried to help wherever it was needed, and as far as she had been able to help. Lan left her barely out of his sight. The bond was gone, but he was still everywhere. Moiraine didn't know how he did it, but the man seemed to appear out of nowhere whenever she least expected it. How could he still find her when the bond was gone?
Quietly, the Cairhien woman left the fortress, walking into the city. The citizens of Fal Dara had returned, trying to return to their normal lives, though everyone knew they had almost been overrun by an army of Trollocs.
