What happens when Moiraine and Rand finally leave Rhuidean?

Chapter 1 - You're in the way

A happy Warder finally hugs his Aes Sedai.

Anxiously, Lan did his best not to jump to his feet. Moiraine was awake. He could feel that. But she was still weak. And no matter how often he tried to convince her to take more from his strength, she didn't listen. At least, she was getting closer to him. Or was he imagining things? If it was the truth, she barely managed to place one foot in front of the other. Blood and ashes! It was frustrating! The bond was muffled since Moiraine had entered Rhuidean!

Angrily, the Malkieri grabbed his sword tighter. He wanted to run. Every cell in his body screamed at him to run to Rhuidean to get her back.

A movement caught his eye, and he grimaced. Melindhra! The woman didn't even try to stay out of sight! She cleaned her spears while watching Lan openly. That insufferable woman had placed herself between Lan and the ring of spears, and Lan knew it was only to remind him not to try something stupid.

The uncrowned king of Malkier stared at the heron-marked blade in his hand. He couldn't fight his way to Rhuidean. He had tried that – multiple times. The Aiel knew how to stop him.

Could he be successful if Egwene helped him? The girl had suggested going after Rand and Moiraine. Would she use the One Power against the Aiel to help him? If he told her that Moiraine was closing in, would that be enough for her to help him, or would she still want to go herself?

Suddenly, said woman jumped to her feet. "There is Rand!"

Immediately, Lan lifted his head. Was she right? The sun had finally reached the top of the hills, giving them a better view of the ring of spears and the fog behind it. It was still hard to see anything, but... There! A dark figure stumbled out of the fog toward the ring of spears! One? Was it just Rand?

The Malkieri jumped to his feet while Egwene started to run. Anxiously, Lan narrowed his eyes at the figure. Was Egwene right? Was it Rand? But what about Moiraine? Lan was still certain that his Aes Sedai was on the move. Shouldn't she be with Rand? Did the boy leave Rhuidean without her?

In that moment, Lan realized that it wasn't just one figure. The walking figure carried someone out of Rhuidean. And since Moiraine wasn't strong enough to carry a big man like Rand...

Lan forgot about his sword and ran after Egwene. This time, Melindhra didn't stop him, and no other Aiel stepped into his way. The young woman from the Two Rivers had a head start, yet they reached the rings of spears at the same time.

For a moment, the uncrowned king of Malkier considered stepping through the spears, but Rand had already reached them, carefully moving himself and Moiraine through the weapons of long-dead Aiel.

Anxiously, Lan waited until they were back on their side of the ring, then sighed in relief when the bond returned completely. No more dull feeling. No more wondering. Moiraine was back. She was weak but alive.

The feeling, when Rand placed the Aes Sedai in the Warder's arms, was overwhelming. It felt like a dream when Lan's hands touched Moiraine's body. She was so light! He was almost scared to hurt her if he pressed her too tightly against him.

But then, Moiraine finally let go of Rand, wrapping her arms around Lan's neck. Immediately, Lan reacted and held her as close as possible. She was back. It had taken seven days for her to return to him, but she was finally back.

Lan tried to look at Moiraine, but the Aes Sedai turned her head to look at Rand. Confused, the Malkieri noticed that the young man from the Two Rivers was also not taking his eyes off Moiraine. And were those tears on his cheeks? What had happened in Rhuidean? What had they seen?
