Moiraine and Lan talk about what's currently on their minds.

Restless, Moiraine stared at the ceiling of the tent. After talking to Rand, she had returned to her and Lan's tent. The Malkieri was still not back, so she had it to herself. Lan was probably still with Melindhra, though she had felt his calmness and focus through the bond. At some point, the man had been training again. Perhaps they were training together.

Tell me, whatever I decide to do, you won't try to stop me. Say that you won't use me for the Tower's ends, or your own. Say it plain so I know it's true.

Foolish boy! He should know better than to ask her not to stop him! He was a child who didn't know what to do but pretended he had all the answers. When would he learn she could only help him if he told her about his plans?

But no. He had decided to enter Rhuidean tomorrow without telling her. And because he is the Dragon Reborn, he doesn't imagine he could fail. That silly boy believed he was untouchable! If the clan chiefs of the Aiel had respect for going into Rhuidean, it was dumb of him not to do the same.

And even if he survived Rhuidean. Then what? What would he like to do? What were his plans? Would surviving Rhuidean automatically make him the Car'a'carn? Would the Aiel follow him? Or would there be other trials?

Blood and ashes! She knew so little! And the Wise Ones weren't helpful either! It seemed like no one was telling her anything anymore. How should she help without having all the necessary information?

And then there were the other things Melaine had mentioned.

If you had not come, you would have died. If Aan'allein had not come, you would have died. If you do not go through Rhuidean, you-

So many death scenarios. It didn't give Moiraine hope for her future. If every misstep meant it would lead to her death, was it wise to keep going? But what else was she supposed to do? She couldn't turn away from Rand. The Creator had arranged that she and Siuan would be present during Gitara's vision. If he didn't want Moiraine to follow Rand, he wouldn't have let her hear it.

Besides, she had tried to give the boy some room after the Eye of the World. And where did that lead? The Daughter of the Night caught up with him and became his lover. Siuan imprisoned the Dragon, and they had to work with a Forsaken to free Rand from the dungeon. No. Stepping back didn't sound like a great idea.

But following him to Rhuidean? She was an Aes Sedai, not a Wise One. What would happen if she went there? What would Rand do? Would he think she was only doing this to control him? Or would it help to make him see that she was willing to sacrifice her life for his survival?

If you do not return, your belongings will be given to your family for remembrance.

Bair and Melaine had told Aviendha that her belongings would be given to her family if she didn't survive Rhuidean. So, it was possible to die there. And with all those death scenarios she had heard about possible wrong decisions, how could she know when she was making a mistake there?

On the other hand, it was also not possible not to go. Melaine hadn't been able to finish her sentences, but Moiraine did not doubt that it would have ended with her possible death. Apparently, the Creator wanted her to go to Rhuidean. But why? What was so important that she had to see it with her own eyes?

The flap of the tent moved, and Lan entered. He was sweating, and still hadn't closed his tunic. That must've been a more difficult training than the one with Rand.

"You're back," she stated the obvious.

Lan closed the flap behind him. "And you're still awake."

Moiraine snorted. "You intended to sneak back inside? Well, then you should tell me the next time, so I'm prepared."
