Moiraine can't sit still while knowing that Siuan will confront Liandrin in the Hall. She decides to take a walk through the streets of Tar Valon, but ends up caught in a memory of her past.
Anxiously, Moiraine sat at the table, staring outside. It was raining heavily. The perfect weather for what was going to happen today. Was it a bad sign? Should they wait until tomorrow to lure Liandrin into a trap? Was it a mistake to expose the Red like that? Should they rather capture her instead of trying to talk to her?
A hand on her shoulder pulled Moiraine out of her thoughts, making her flinch before she recognized Lan's calm presence. He placed a steaming cup in front of her. Her favorite tea. Lan had noticed her anxiety.
Quickly, the Aes Sedai threw a glance at the Emond's Fielder who had gathered around the bar, drinking tea and laughing. Apparently, they hadn't noticed Moiraine's mood.
Why weren't they nervous? Nynaeve would be part of Liandrin's trial. Didn't they worry about their friend? She would face someone from the Black Ajah. Sure, she would be surrounded by other Aes Sedai who would protect her, but...
An image appeared before Moiraine's eyes — Siuan, lying dead on the floor in front of the Amyrlin Seat.
Cursing inwardly, Moiraine grabbed the cup to busy herself. Blood and ashes! She shouldn't think like that! Siuan was surrounded by countless Aes Sedai. She would be safe. Liandrin couldn't kill her. Right?
Lan squeezed Moiraine's shoulder, then turned around without another word. They couldn't talk openly with the kids present. But they also couldn't leave them. Especially the boys seemed to love getting themselves into trouble. And with the Black Ajah situation at their hands, Moiraine couldn't handle another disaster. No. It was better to keep them within sight.
Not even Elayne was there. They had decided that the daughter-heir would accompany Nynaeve to the White Tower. Surely, the Tower was very interested in getting the daughter-heir of Andor back.
But what if Liandrin had help? What if she noticed the trap? What if Lanfear – who was still on the loose – warned the Red and told her about Rand? Did Lanfear even know Rand was in Tar Valon?
Blood and ashes! Was it a mistake to stay in Tar Valon? The boy needed Callandor to protect himself against the Forsaken. Ishamael had freed not only Lanfear but all the other Forsaken as well. If one of them got their hands on him...
Again, Moiraine threw a glance at Rand. He didn't seem worried. He was laughing and drinking with Mat and Perrin. Why were they laughing? That wasn't the right time to laugh or have fun. Was Rand even thinking about his next steps? Was he thinking about her constantly reminding him to go to Tear to get Callandor? Light! He should be preparing for his next moves!
A lightning lit up the room, followed by an enormous thunder. The Emond's Fielder giggled, but Moiraine's eyes were already staring outside, drawn to the top of the White Tower. Somewhere up there were Siuan's quarters. Was she preparing herself for the trial? How did she plan to attack Liandrin? Which sisters would be accompanying her? What-
Cursing inwardly, the Cairhien woman pushed her chair back, then got to her feet and rushed to the door. She needed to clear her head. She would go mad if she kept sitting around, doing nothing.
Someone was mumbling something when she passed the kids, and they all started to giggle. But Moiraine didn't care. She didn't care about what they thought about her. It was time to leave them to themselves. Perhaps the rain could help her cool down.
The Aes Sedai grabbed her cloak, then opened the door and stepped outside. They had booked the rooms above a small inn, and she liked to leave the building through the back door. This way, it was more likely she could leave unseen.
