Moiraine and Lan see the smoke around the White Tower and decide to offer their help. Will they succeed?

The sound of an explosion echoed through the air, and there was no doubt that it hadn't been thunder. Moiraine had ordered herself a cup of tea inside the inn, hoping it could help distract her and warm her cold body. But the sound shook everyone inside the inn, making them look to the ceiling.

Moiraine felt Lan's worries and anxiety through the bond. Immediately, she forgot about her tea and rushed outside.

It was still pouring, and the Malkieri looked like he hadn't moved at all, still staring at the White Tower. The Cairhien woman stepped before him while a shiver moved over her back. It was hard to believe, but... The White Tower was burning!

Siuan!

Apparently, Liandrin hadn't taken it well that Siuan wanted to question her. And from the look of it, she had help from others. The Red Sister wasn't strong enough to make the White Tower burn.

The Aes Sedai and Warder exchanged a worried look. They both had someone in the Tower whom they cared about. And the fire... well, it wasn't good news.

"Stay with the kids," Moiraine ordered sharply. "If someone comes asking for Rand, get him out of the city."

Lan didn't even give her the chance to leave. Once the last word had left her lips, the Malkieri's fingers wrapped tightly around her arm, pulling her close to him. His anger rolled openly through the bond. "No."

"Lan, we-"

"You can't go."

"The Tower is burning!" Moiraine hissed. "I have to-"

"You can't go there."

Moiraine wished she could punch something. She knew she couldn't enter the Tower, but that didn't mean she would stay with the kids while her sisters were fighting against the Black Ajah. That place had been her home for decades! "What are you suggesting?"

The uncrowned king of Malkier sighed, throwing a glance at the Tower. "I'll go. You stay with Rand and the others."

Immediately, Moiraine shook her head. "I won't hide while my sisters are fighting."

"But you expect me to stay behind while everyone else is fighting?"

Ashamed, the woman of the Blue Ajah lowered her head. Lan was right. Expecting him to stay behind while she wasn't willing to do the same... But someone had to watch the children.

"I'm sorry. But the kids... they trust you."

Lan snorted. "They trust each other. Not me. They know I belong to you and fear I will tell you everything they say." He paused, then added, "Which I do. So, I understand their distrust."

Blood and ashes! Was now really the time to talk about who the kids trusted the most?! Moiraine wanted to scream. Grimacing, she stepped closer to minimize the danger of someone eavesdropping on them. "We can't leave Rand. He needs to be watched if-"

"Can't we?" Surprised, Moiraine's eyes widened. How could Lan say that? He knew what was at risk. "That boy is having a good time with his friends. It's still pouring. They won't go anywhere."

Cursing inwardly, Moiraine turned her head toward the Tower. Dark clouds moved around the white building, sending a shiver down her back. What had happened there? How many people got hurt?

"It's your choice, Moiraine. Either we stay here, watching Rand while he ignores us, or we go to the Tower, seeing how we can help without you entering it. Whatever your choice is, we stay together."
