Chapter 2 - Waking from the dream
Moiraine and Lan find Rand in front of his broken cave.
Trigger warning! Mentioning of character's death!
Moiraine wanted to scream when she couldn't feel the use of Saidar anymore. What did that mean? Was the attack over? Was Rand using Saidin right now? Or had it truly been a false alarm? Did Egwene play with the One Power?
The Cairhien woman had decided to keep rushing toward Rand's cave because she didn't know where else to search for him. Lan had caught up with her soon after she had left her cave. He was wearing his belt and his sword again. Not one word had left his lips, but Moiraine felt that he wasn't happy she hadn't waited for him.
But somehow Moiraine knew that there was something bigger going on at the moment. Lanfear wouldn't be waiting for her at Rand's cave. And it made her extremely nervous that no one was using Saidar anymore.
Did that mean the channeler was dead? Had something happened to Egwene? – Or to the Wise Ones? Or was it Rand who had turned mad? Was it possible he had attacked Egwene? Light! She should order Lan to stay by Rand's side from now on. They needed an eye on the Dragon Reborn if they wanted him to survive.
Suddenly, a loud thunder shook Cold Rock's Hold. Everything was shaking, and even the earth moved beneath their feet. Moiraine struggled to keep her balance. Was that an earthquake?
In the next moment, Lan grabbed her arms, pushing her against the next wall, then folding his body around hers. Moiraine couldn't see anything but winced whenever she heard something breaking or stones falling. What if the stones buried them or knocked out Lan?
The Aes Sedai embraced Saidar. Her fingers tried to weave a protection shield, but she couldn't move her arms. The Malkieri gave her no room to channel, and it didn't seem like he thought about stepping back.
Moiraine released the One Power when the noise became too much for her. A part of her wished she could cover her ears, but Lan's body pressed her close to the wall. When would the earthquake stop?
It felt like forever until the noise faded, and the world stopped shaking. Yet, the Malkieri didn't step back immediately. He waited as if he wanted to be sure that there was no second earthquake.
"Are you injured?"
Moiraine noticed she was trembling when Lan finally stepped back. Sighing, she turned around, leaning against the wall with her back to steady herself.
Immediately, her Warder closed the distance again, cupping her face with his hands. His worry filled the bond. "Moiraine?"
"I need a moment."
Lan didn't ask why. He simply took her right hand, placing it above his beating heart while the other hand pulled their foreheads together. At the same time, he sent his calm through the bond, allowing Moiraine to draw from his calm.
It was a trick they had used many times over the years. Sometimes, Lan would only send calm feelings through the bond, depending on the situation, since they hadn't always had the opportunity to search for a quiet place. But that version was always the one that helped the most.
The uncrowned king of Malkier waited patiently until the Cairhien woman pressed her hand against his chest. A silent sign, telling him that she was doing better. Gently, he pressed a kiss to her forehead.
"Can you feel anything?" He murmured.
"No."
"The earthquake. Rand?"
