Moiraine feels Lan's pain when Melindhra dies.
Trigger warning: mention of character's death
Moiraine stood beside Bair, watching the desert while the Wise One was talking to Egwene and Aviendha. She wasn't paying attention to what the others were talking about. Someone had prepared a tent for the Wise Ones, and Bair had invited the Cairhien woman to join them.
Did you see it happen? In the Waste? Does Lanfear-
Kill me here? Sometimes. But other places too. It's like you said, it could be today, it could be tomorrow. It could be a year from now. I think it's today.
The Aes Sedai's mind was racing. Was it already time? Would Lanfear kill her today? Rand planned to speak to the other clan chiefs today. If the Daughter of the Night decided to attack while the boy was distracted...
Automatically, Moiraine's hand reached for the Sakarnen, hidden within her dress. She had seen how much power she could wield while using it. Would it be enough to fight against Lanfear? And what happened if Moiraine lost her fight against her enemy? Would their fight be enough to exhaust Lanfear? Would it be enough so that the woman wouldn't have the strength to kill Lan, Rand, Egwene, and the Aiel?
Angrily, Moiraine gritted her teeth when she imagined how Lanfear would kill everyone once the Aes Sedai was out of the way. Blood and ashes! Why had she not thought about that possibility?! She had accepted that Lanfear would kill her. But Lan and the others were supposed to be safe!
I could give Lan the order to return to Nynaeve. But then, I have to release him from the bond since there will be no other opportunity to do it.
And that wasn't a good idea. Because as soon as Lan wasn't bonded to her anymore, he could ignore her last order. And Moiraine did not doubt that the stubborn man would decide to stay by her side.
How can I save them? Lanfear is pissed. She will kill everyone if she gets the chance. Should I give Egwene the Sarkanen? Did I get it wrong? Is it not meant for Nynaeve? Am I supposed to give it to Egwene, so she can protect Rand from Lanfear? She isn't as powerful as Nynaeve but still extremely powerful.
But if Egwene was supposed to get the Sakarnen, why did the Creator allow Lan to go to the Aiel Waste? Why didn't he allow the Malkieri to stay with Nynaeve? Or was Egwene just using the Sakarnen to fight against Lanfear? Was it possible she would give the object to Lan once Lanfear was taken care of, so the Malkieri could return it to the White Tower?
Blood and ashes! What was she supposed to do?! Was there a way to make the right decision? Or could Moiraine only hope for the best?
"Moiraine Sedai?"
The woman of the Blue Ajah winced when she felt the touch of a hand on her arm. Her first instinct was to embrace Saidar, but she stopped herself when she recognized Bair. The Aiel woman looked worried.
"Are you not feeling well?"
Quickly, Moiraine forced a smile on her lips. "There's a lot on my mind."
It didn't work. Bair watched Moiraine with wary eyes. "Do you know what's going to happen today?"
Dangerous question. Moiraine couldn't tell her that it was possible that she would die today. Bair had to be there for Rand. He needed all the support he could get against the other clan chiefs. Failure was not an option. Rand needed the Aiel as his army.
"I don't know what's going to happen between Rand and the other clan chiefs. I'm as clueless as you are. Although...." She tilted her head. "... some could perhaps argue that it's not true since you know the other clan chiefs, unlike me. Perhaps you already know which one will stand behind Rand and who won't."
