Moiraine visits Lanfear to give her information about the Emond's Fielders.
Anxiously, Moiraine stood on the balcony where she and Lan had run into Lanfear this morning. She didn't know why she had chosen that spot again, but hoped Lanfear would search for her in that spot rather than at the inn. It was better to keep the Dragon Reborn and the Daughter of the Night separated.
Lan was still unhappy about her decision to leave without him, but wasn't getting closer. Moiraine assumed that Nynaeve kept him occupied.
Well, it was better that he wasn't there. She didn't want him anywhere near Lanfear. Lan would protect Moiraine should the Forsaken try to kill her, killing himself in the process. Moiraine couldn't let that happen.
"Back so soon?"
Although she had waited for Lanfear to show up, it was still a shock when she heard the voice of her enemy. She would rather deal with Liandrin than with the Daughter of the Night. Yet, Moiraine forced herself to keep her face straight when she turned around.
"Did you miss me already?"
Moiraine ignored the question. "Rand studies the prophecies, trying to find loopholes so he has a reason not to go to Tear."
Lanfear nodded. "He needs a distraction that keeps him away from the prophecies."
It made the Blue's stomach twist when she thought about agreeing with the other woman, but sadly, her enemy was right. Rand needed to be distracted. He had to see that his friends were in danger, so he would separate himself from them.
Lanfear's smile grew. "Does that mean I'm allowed to play with his friends?"
Angrily, Moraine closed the distance between them. "No. You will play by my rules or not at all."
It was stupid. She had known it the moment she had taken the first step. But it was too late. Lanfear grabbed Moiraine by the throat, pushing her against a stone pillar and bringing their faces together while Moiraine gasped for air.
"Careful, little one. You don't give me orders. I'd still like to kill you."
Blood and ashes! But now it was too late to turn back. "You... need... me," Moiraine croaked.
"I need no one," Lanfear hissed. "And especially not you. You shouldn't overestimate your value to me. I could use countless other Aes Sedai."
That was probably true. Moiraine did not doubt that Lanfear was still thinking about killing her. And she had played right into her hands. But there was a reason why Lanfear still kept her alive. "They... don't... travel... with... Rand."
The Cairhien woman almost smiled when her opponent grimaced at her words. In the next second, Lanfear released her, and Moiraine inhaled deeply. Blood and ashes! She had to be more careful!
"You said it yourself," Moiraine croaked while rubbing her throat. "I know those kids. You need my knowledge to scare them."
For a moment, the Cairhien woman thought Lanfear would strangle her again, but then, the other woman took a deep breath. "I don't need you. I could kill those kids in an instant."
"And lose Rand's trust immediately. He will never forgive you if you kill his friends."
Finally, the Daughter of the Night stepped back, giving Moiraine some room to breathe. "Fine. What did you come up with?"
Trembling, Moiraine leaned against the stone balustrade, hoping to hide her bad condition. She didn't want Lanfear to know how scared she was of her.
"No matter what you think of me, I don't want to hurt those kids."
